I don't pack bentos but I do love looking at them and taking a few ideas here and there.

This is a good site -I fancy having a go at the teriyaki chicken and the lentil snacks.

I think this one may have been mentioned, but it's also fab.
  • Just discovered the bento box and thought i would restart this thread for 2009!
How is everyone getting on with theirs?
I cant believe i have gone through 28yrs of life without knowing of the bento...and my aunt used to live in Japan!!!!!!!!!!
I love the little egg moulds but our school has no egg rule because of allergies (and no nut, peanut butter, kiwi aswell!) however i will use them for weekends!!

Eh? can others be affected by sitting in the same room as an egg sandwich?
Kiwi is a new one on me , or am I completely insensitive to the needs of others lol
  • I'm now a bento fiend !!
Hubby thinks I've gone doo lally and the youngest loves it as well. On the plus side for me I have lost 6lbs in the past 3 weeks and that's just by doing bento lunches ;)

I'm still trying to perfect the cute factor and am no where near as experienced as the pics in the thread show!!

I'm trying to persuade hubby that i need Bento's, hes not convinced yet....i won't give up :D
  • I have just tonight placed my order....my very long order...from Japan centre (well i do have 3 daughters so i will cost abit wont it mr.happymummy!!!!)
I found it hard to judge the size i needed as i know exactly what will be going in them now and have also had a request from oldest daughter to include duck in pancakes that she loves but has never taken to school for fear of it being too exotic....well we will be at the forfront of exotic now and its upto everyone else to keep up,lol.
Yes egg is a huge issue because if they eat it then touch a handrail or book that the allergic child then touches.......we get shouted at and allergic child gets sick!(much as i would relish the thought of every child cooing over my daughters hello kitty crafted egg, lol,i wouldnt want to hurt anyone!!)
Cant wait for delivery-perhaps we should have a dedicated Bento thread as its obviously only something you find out about by accident and it does save money ect when you have a few kids and can buy eg crackers and jam in bulk for 'chips'n'dip' and make it all last ages!!
    it takes more energy
    to hate than to love...
    love and relax!

this is a bad bad thread - I've got to get me a Bento!

Queston is - do they stay shut - i don't see any fasteners or is that why they need to be in a bag?
Just call me Nodwah the thread killer
  • Arkonite - where did you get them and how was the postage to NI? We all love Bento but when I looked at the Japan Centre etc the postage to NI looked a bit complicated. Was it ok?

    Thanks

  • Thriftmonster i just ordered from japancentre to NI and the postage was £5.50 1st class royal mail so no different to the uk i dont think.
it goes by weight of you order so if you put all the items into your basket it calculates the weight aswell so you can work it out before you confirm the order.
Nodwah, some bento's have a clip shut type lid others use a little elastic strap to hold it together these are the ones ive ordered,i am looking for a nice wee bag now to put them in,some nice ones on ebay!

    :naughty:get your sewing machine out!!!

I tried that and it ended up looking like a squashed handbag :p

Japan centre usually do have kinchaku (the proper name for the bags) but I think they are out of stock at present. You could also try using a furoshiki?

Word of advice, if anyone does buy bento items on Ebay, be very careful of the costs, it can be expensive and ultimately might be cheaper to buy from somewhere like Jbox.
