Good job we don't need lunchboxes at the moment - although I could offer to make dh's lunch for him. Hmmm, he can be our guinea pig! :rotfl:

I was reading about bento boxes the other night and I've decided to give them a go. I posted a question but the thread has disappeared down the pages, so here it is again...
If you put sliced up fruit in, how do you stop it going brown?
Plus, does anyone do these and have a child who throws their lunchbag around? Does it all get jumbled up?

I take an apple, quarter it, and remove the core. I then put it back together (being careful to match the pieces accurately) and wrap tightly in clingfilm. No browning by lunch, without using lemaon juice.
I also really like the smallest Lock & Lock boxes. They're great for small portions of fruit, and individual puddings (such as jelly).

Thanks, that sounds good. I like apples but only if they are cut up, so have always avoided them in packed lunches.
Do you find jelly goes runny? I made one in a little pot for dd when she was at nursery and she could have drank it by lunchtime! Do you make them thicker or something?0 -
custard and rice pudding should also travel quite well.

No, never had that problem. Did you add fruit to it? The jelly is set using gelatine, which is a protein. If you add certain fruits (pineapple, and possibly kiwi) they contain an enzyme which breaks down that protien.
The fruits to avoid are noted on the side of the jelly pack.

My kids alwys have at least 2 portions of fruit and veg in their packed lunch and we do chop up apple and put it in an air tight box and it seems ok, just a little brown at the end of the day if there are any leftovers for me to see!!0

Does anyone know the size of the larger mothercare pots and whether they will fit into one of the divided boxes from Lakeland?
I like the look of the laptop lunch boxes but they are very expensive and may be a bit big for my 5 yr old anyway. Would the 800ml one from Lakeland be sufficient do you think? Plus would the rest of us (adults and 15 yr old) need the litre one? We don't have a Lakeland shop here and I can't get a mental image of them iykwim?
The tiny mothercare pots only seem big enough for dips really and I think the bigger ones would be more suitable for a dessert. However, I don't want to order them and find they don't fit! There are no measurements on the website, only the volume they hold which means nothing to me!
Does anyone use this combination or can anyone suggest something else?

BTW, I made the hobnobs the other night (yummy, scrummy they were too) and they did taste just like the real thing!0 -
