Local waste dump charging for DIY waste

our dump records the reg of vehicles sometimes. unsure what they do with it. local jobs-worth at our dump tried to say we were trade just cause we dumped 3 transits of wood/rubble in a 3 month period. We were doing major renovation work. We complained to head of recycling at council...got an apology back. that was 3 years ago now.

Something similar happened to us when we were restoring our last-but-one period property, a large six-bed place that had formally been divided into four flats that we were reconfiguring as a family home. We had masses of rubbish to be removed and to save on skip costs we occasionally borrowed a van from a friend that owned a bathroom showroom. We were accused more than once of dumping trade waste from plumbing jobs - even though it was clearly apparent that none of the rubble etc bore the slightest resemblance to old bathroom fittings :o Eventually we convinced them, but next time we went through the same malarkey

Our local skip seems to hit van drivers hard and wont let them in without a certificate.

Before they did that I rarely if ever saw any cars with trailers.
Since then every time I go there are at least three or four vehicles with trailers dropping off waste.

Don't have a problem with the 'user pays' system. One council's policy here.

Our tip doesn't allow people to arrive on foot. Isn't that social exclusion?

A permit is required for cars with trailers, as well as for larger vans etc.

Basically, it's only free if a) you arrive in a car and b) don't deposit any of the charged-for stuff.

Ours too, nor cycles. It wouldn't be safe for them as the access ramp is narrow without a pavement.
  • The one in the city where I grew up has a barrier with height restriction for vehicles meaning that something such as a Landy won't fit underneath. At certain times they raise the barrier, but unless you know when this is and time your visit accordingly you are up the creek......last year when clearing out my parents' house before it was sold after they both had to go into a nursing home, we took a Landy full of stuff to the dump only to be refused entry by some officious bloke. He refused to raise the barrier, but eventually his superior allowed us to park outside and walk in (up a steep incline) with several trolley-loads of rubbish

It will cost the council a lot more when its fly tipped

:T:T:T:T And this is where it really will come back to bite.

Our area is a limit of 3 bags per car/van, but no limit on wood/chipboard or plasterboard, just hardcore, brick end etc.

Even given that the usual r-soles still tip in every country lane passing place they can find.:eek:

Our local "household recycling centre" (a.k.a. "the tip") recently started charging £3 per car load. It just means that you fill up your car before visiting rather than drop off stuff whenever you are passing.

I don't mind paying £3 for disposing of my junk when I do a declutter but if it was any more I'd just drive over the border into the neighbouring authority where it is still free.

:D:D:D They thought of that already, our "neighbouring" tip now asks for ID and something with the correct post code on it.

I really am not kidding, the fly tippers are going to win this 1:A
