Wow, the arguments over a £10 Xmas 'bonus' for those that are just too ill to work. I'm sure many will be extremely grateful for it and in actual need of it, there's really no need to stand in judgement over a £10 payment. I am donating mine to Children In Need if it's of any consolation.

Ours (two lots of £10) go to the Sally Ann every year. Shame that more people don't recognise that there are always others who are in a worse position than themselves.

Greed may be the factor involved and 'crossing over the road' to avoid street collectors.
  • Ours will be sent anonymously to a single parent from our church who does not have a great deal, hope it will make Christmas a bit better for her and her little one.

That's lovely. I'm sure that it is well deserved - more people should have that Christmas spirit.
  • Good that you can 'buy' a little quality time. Enjoy it.

(I do hope the church stops using that dreadful word 'Winterval' next year :) ).

Thank you. Actually my cup runneth over, because Social Services allocated another hour per week last month, and a further hour this month "on a temporary basis, to be reviewed in January 2014".

I'm somewhat bemused by the temporary basis idea, as DH is not going to improve dramatically, or even marginally, over the Christmas period, but there you go - mine not to reason why!

Yes our church started using the word "Winterval" , to describe the Christmas Bazaar, about 5 years ago. People attend of every colour and creed, and everyone refers to it as The Christmas Bazaar!

But it raises a huge amount of money, which is distributed to various charities in the area, who in turn host Christmas lunches on the Saturdays in December, for those in need of all ages. Like many fellow carers, I enjoy DH's lunch by helping in the kitchens whilst he's being fed and entertained.

I know £10 doesn't buy what it did in the 1970s, but it's welcomed by many, and those that don't need it can donate it like you do. My Smilies are not working at the moment, so this is a written Smiley Face!

    xx
  • My husband and son delivered a washing machine (donated by another church member) to the single parent yesterday, and both came back quite bothered at how pokey (although clean and tidy) her flat was and how little she had - even some saucepans with no handles :(). My husband and I just thought it was something we could do for her.

I believe it's paid in the first full week in December on your normal pension day - which if your pension is being paid every 4 weeks can mean a one off £10 only

and my prediction was verified this morning:j

    can hardly wait lol
to think this bonus was £10 in the early 70s when £10 actually bought something
It was equivalent to one weeks pension when it was first introduced in the 1970s. Had it kept pace with Retirement Pension it would be worth £110.15.

That would have made a nice bonus - but £10 better than a kick in teeth x
