Abusers of Disabled Bays

I see there has been a POPLA decision in favour of someone who parked in a Disabled Bay and I agree with the decision on the grounds that were given.
PE claimed they were depriving a disabled person else of a space, but this is not a financial loss to them, it is a loss to another disabled person who cannot park or get into the store easily.
I deplore people who park in disabled spaces, especially in a very busy car park and/or who have blue badges when they are clearly not entitled to them.
So how would you stop people doing this?
Because if there is no come back at all, on that basis disabled parking bays will be taken up by inconsiderate drivers.
Sometimes it can be genuine and the badge is just not displayed or it could be a temporary disability. Most people consider others and don't do it. But what about the ones who really couldn't give a toss and just park there anyway?
I would be in favour of saying they have to make a payment to the Landowner's chosen charity representing disability.
It does all stem back to the amount these parking charges are if they were say £15 or £20 would you all still be here defending it if it was done and regulated properly?
Because I'm a great believer in if you are anti something and you want it changed you have to come up with viable alternatives.
For example it states on BPA website up to a £100 is ok? Why when we know this does not represent a true loss to the landowner?

I would LOVE to know how you determine who is and who is not "entitled" to a blue badge when you observe them.
We had a blue badge for my mother in law when she was alive. We had often had to counter ignorant comments from "do-gooders" like you when we went to collect her from somewhere. Other people have less visible disabilities. You cannot see it by observation, yet it's still there.
The next time you see a person park in a disabled space and walk away from the car unaided, consider whether YOU have all the facts before you jump to a conclusion. You don't - of course - so maybe get off your high horse once in a while.Under no circumstances may any part of my postings be used, quoted, repeated, transferred or published by any third party in ANY medium outside of this website without express written permission. Thank you.0 -
Of course if they had anything about them, they could have said it did represent a loss to the landowner because it meant they may have potentially lost a disabled customer who could not park and they were keen to provide facilities for the disabled customer. The most wasted day is one in which we have not laughed.0

must say I agree with most of the post #2 myself
to look at me you may not realise that I have had a back condition for over 27 years and am registered disabled and a blue badge holder too (the newer one where you jump through more hoops to get it)
many people have made the mistake of looking at me in those intervening years and decided that there is nothing wrong, disputed by my specialist and the blood tests and scans I have had done in that time
DO NOT JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER is all I am saying
when I do use my blue badge , which is correctly but rarely, I am entitled to use it and should not have to justify myself to anyone other than those who can reasonably question me, like doctors, specialists , the council ( they issue the BB )
I should also add that you pay £10 for one now, its not free and does not last forever , perhaps 3 years before renewal ?0 -

The blue badge scheme has been tightened up a lot but the criteria is still how far you are able to walk. That is a fact. I know many people with very serious disabilities who don't have them including those with learning disabilities who get lower rate mobility.
So let's not get into a fight about those who are genuine users please. There are people who have them when they shouldn't but more importantly there are people who have no regard for disability at all and just park there anyway, which was actually the point of my post.
on that we are both agreed
those who are not entitled or have "borrowed" them etc should be hung , drawn and quartered IMHO
the able bodied people should stop being lazy and let those in genuine need use the places provided for them
IMHO the car parks (all of them) should allow those responsible people with the BB to park for free in the designated bays 24/7/365 - no question0 -
Do Asda still split the money between 2 charities? I used to support that idea0

I also believe the car parks and hospitals and councils and airports and landowners have broken the EQUALITY ACT 2010 by introducing charging and/or removing disabled bays on their public car parks0

It's the SOMEBODY should do SOMETHING syndrome, but the Blue Badge fairy doesn't exist, I am afraid.
For "somebody" to police private disabled parking slots, then "somebody else" would have to pay them or they would have to be volunteers.
So, we don't want PPCs to impose huge penalties, nor do I want my shopping prices to rise to pay for this, so where do we go?
Maybe shops could impose a ban on people who abuse the spaces. Likely!
It's a ping-pong ball with a dent in it.
And the best people to come up with a solution would be a mobility/disability organisation, surely?0 -
I'll leave Coupon Mad to comment on this one as she's an expert in this area.
I will just point out that Blue Badges have no relevance on private ground and so PPCs that insist on them for the use of a disabled space are possibly breaking the Equality Act.0 -
FOI has nothing to do with parking.0
