The Dog Just Went Mad

I walked the dog. Got home, gave her a chew and put the kettle on.

Then I heard a loud bag. Mia, our 18 month old lab had gone mad. She was chasing her tail and bumping into things. I managed to get her out if the French doors into the garden where she had more room. She then started jumping in the air and running in circles round the rotary airer. She was skidding all over the place and falling over but it didn't seem to stop her. It was although she was possessed. This lasted about 3-4 minutes when she just stopped.

I am now worried that there is something wrong with her. :(

I am hoping it wasn't a fit if some kind. I have checked her all over and can't find any bits. As I thought this may have been the cause.

Can anyone shed any light ?

ETA she is walked on a harness and no longer pulls.

Normal behaviour in some breeds, (mine does something similar every time we get in from a walk), but I can see why you're worried if it's not happened before - do you get occasional mad 5 minutes as a rule, or is this a first?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Was it just like the mad half hour thing that many dogs have?

My younger dog goes crazy like this every so often, tearing round the house and up the stairs about five times like a lunatic.

Or if outdoors he sprints round in circles, leaping all over my distinctly unimpressed older female dog and jumping up in the air and spinning round.

I thought all dogs had these moments of madness...?

My cats have a mad half hour as well now and then, just running off excess energy. Nothing to worry about.

I have a springer and a cocker, I have this several times a day! When they have a bath there is absolute hell on for about 20 minutes!

    Thanks for all replies.

It is the first time she has done it here. We have not had her long, but made a phone call and apparently she did it a couple of times as a pup.

She wasn't gnawing her tail, it was more like it was a toy she wanted to get hold off.

You have all calmed me down, as I can see that other dogs do the same. She is such a calm dog normally it came as a bit of a shock.

my staffie Anni did 'chase the tail' regularly - and also had a 'mad half hour' where she tore round the house like a dog possessed! usually, if she hadn't had enough 'exercise' on her evening walk. we soon learned to give her time 'off lead' to work that off! when she just jumped around, tried to beat her own 'speed trial' and just generally 'goof around'!
she had a lot of energy and while she would appreciate short walks on lead - she would make up for it by treating the house as an 'obstacle course'! which of course led to me and kids collapsing with laughter and OH annoyed by a dog careering around out of control! (which she wasn't really, as a sharp 'Anni' 'SIT' or 'Come Here' would be obeyed).

We call that bum tucking. Our lab has always done it, not so much now shes getting older. There's no routine as to when it will happen and to how often either. Sometimes she'll start in-doors, literally bouncing off the sofa and skidding through the house, so we open back door and she'll just run flat out all round the garden. Id say its totally normal lab behaviour.
