Road Tax or whatever they call it nowadays

It's one of my pet hates to have a car which doesn't get taxed at the same time as it gets MOT'd.
I'm the opposite. I like to have tax and MoT at different times. That way, if the car fails the test, you can take your time about deciding what to do with it (DIY, or get quotes, or whatever) without the pressure of a tax expiry looming down on you.I can remember the VRN of the first car that I owned from 1978 (1977), and the numbers of my fathers cars from the 60s (50s and 60s), as I've got older the numbers just won't stick anymore .
I am extremely proud that after only 5 years I can recall my mobile phone number (8 times out of 10, sometimes I double the wrong number at the start)
With the changes in bold, I could have written every single word of this, even to getting the wrong numbers doubled in the phone number. 07792 or 07992? I have no idea unless I look. At least I am not alone. If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0 -
I clean the windscreen from the drivers seat. :cool:0

Obviously there are *some* people who don't, but most? I would be concerned if that were the case.
I can remember nearly every single one of the numbers for the cars I've owned.
That's what my experience was: most people couldn't remember their VRN, especially women.0 -
Please don't call it road tax, as there is no tax on the public highway. The public highway is financed out of general taxation. What you pay on your car is VED or a car tax: http://ipayroadtax.com/0

All true, but the fact remains that I'm not allowed to use my motor vehicles on the public highway without paying my VED and insuring my vehicle against risk; a situation which I'm entirely happy with as I understand the principles of taxation and risk management.
What I'm not happy about is that there is an inequality in the way road users are treated. Yes, I drive a car and ride a motorcycle. I pay my tax and insurance on them.
I also ride a bicycle, and hold insurance against the risk of an incident on that, too. I would be only too happy to pay a tax without which I would not be allowed to use the roads, and to display a registration plate on my bicycle.
Whatever it's called, the privilege of using roads should be offered only in a fair and equitable way to all those prepared to pay for it.0 -

This was all dealt with in the title and the first post.0 -

It is.
Certain classes of car pay zero VED, too.
Getting back to the original topic, it's a pity that they dropped the sticker that came on the MOT certificate for a few years.0 -
