Road Tax or whatever they call it nowadays

VED I'm guessing.

I got my final reminder in the other day. 2 weeks after the end of OCT expiry. Thing is, it's the first final reminder I've ever had due to the fact that I've always acted on the initial reminder. But it, and any subsequents, never arrived. (Royal Mail??)

I genuinely forgot. Because I am now conditioned to obey the reminder. It arives and I action it online immediately.

Now if the onus was on the individual to ensure cars were taxed on time, why send reminders at all? Drivers would then not expect, nor rely on them.

Thoughts?

The onus is on the vehicle's keeper, the reminders are just to facilitate your memory and avoid allegations that they want you to forget so they can fine you and generate more revenues
  • The big numbers on a disc stuck to my windscreen act as my reminder.

What do you do come MOT time? Who reminds you?

Me, I remember. Never had an MOT reminder through the post because they don't exist. See my point above re. this.

Maybe if you didnt tax it or SORN it. I wonder if its another step they added to make sure when they send you a fine through for not doing either its harder to say you never received both letters?

  • Indeed.
Only other thing going for me is my DVLA history of never having paid late - because the reminder always arrived when it should. Not any more, it seems. Anyway, it's done now, just waiting on the disk which usually only takes a couple of days.

What's the chances of a fine getting lost in the post? Precisely none. :)

I remember when my MOTs are, as I get them done in the Easter, or Summer holiday. I wouldn't otherwise remember.

However, for a trifling fee (just a few pounds) you can get a text message telling you that your MOT is due.

As to the big numbers on the disc, I couldn't even tell you the big numbers on the plates front & back, I'm hardly going to remember numbers on a piece of paper.

Like the OP, I action a reminder immediately, or I would simply forget all about it, then I put the new disc in the holder when it arrives, (or I would simply forget about it) which apparently is a Crime Against The State.

Look in the bottom left hand corner of the windscreen when you are cleaning it, there is a reminder there ;)

I got a reminder letter from the garage I have my car serviced at and a polite phone call offering me a MOT at half price. ;)

I get a text every year from my former garage, pity I got rid of the car a few years ago after moving a fair way away too

I commend you to take more notice and remember these things. You are likely to bring unwanted attention on yourself if stopped for any sort of police check and you don't know the index number when asked.
