Yet another 'what tablet' thread, but haven't seen anyone mention Kindle Fire HD - in a good or bad way?
Looking for tablet for OH for Xmas. General internet browsing. Online banking (especially Halifax). Youtube. Email of some description (doesn't use it much so setting up new account would be ok). Hargeaves Lansdown - website ok, doesn't need app.
Main thing he would use it for is gambling
. All the betting and (free) sports sites - would want live streaming of races/golf and pre-recorded racing videos etc - live from the sites, not downloaded.
I can confidently say he would NEVER download a film or play anything more complex than hearts :rotfl:.
Kindle app (or similar) with access to classic books and able to enlarge font if desired.
Quality of picture is very important, especially as only 7" - uses a 17" laptop in the house.
Mobile internet access not really an issue. At present he doesn't have his own phone, just work one, but may be getting one soon. It will be a basic phone so no option for tethering. He'll be happy to use indoors on wifi and use free wifi out and about (travels on trains a lot and can use 1st class free wifi on most networks). He is too mean to pay for remote access
.
I thought Kindle HD was the answer but haven't seen it mentioned?
Thanks.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

Bought one a few weeks ago as easier to take away than my iPad, does everything the iPad does but just slower. Can also connect to TV using HDMI cable if you did want to view stored films etc, also links to my earlier Kindle and gives easy access to any books I have downloaded from Amazon. Only drawback is the screen size but the font can be enlarged by using the two finger option.0

Why do you think nobody is mentioning it? Try looking a bit harder, I've seen several threads in which it's compared to other tablets.0

there are also many comparison reviews online...Friendly greeting!0

I have looked but most are comparing specs etc which is not too important as not downloading so memory/download speeds not really relevant. I'm just interested as to why it's not really been mentioned on any of the MSE threads as it seems a comparable (or better) price and spec to others?A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

It has been mentioned .
Is anyone recommending it probably not due to the Kindle lock in .
Nexus 7 will do all that Kindle HD will and more .
Probably one of the better budget tablets but not as good as the old Nexus at around the same price and inferior to the new Nexus 7 .

Based on the older Nexus .
Live streaming really depends upon who is streaming and what quality plus the quality of your connection to the Tablet .
Kindle Books all Google / Samsung etc have a Kindle App.
Email should be pretty standard on any tablet .
Likewise internet/ web browsing .
Truth is that their are many and varied Tablets now from dirt cheap to top quality at a price .0 -
I wouldn't buy one because there's no way I'm going to pay extra to avoid adverts. There are lots of tablets out there-why buy from somebody who fines you for not being able to spam you?import this0

When I was looking for a tablet for my wife for Xmas last year, this was the main reason I discounted the Kindle Fire range. (Ended up getting a Nexus 7).0 -

Yes providing you are willing to void your warranty .0 -
gallygirl - a lot of gambling and streaming sites use Adobe Flash. You won't be using that on a tablet. (you can get Flash onto some tablets, I've done it, it's rubbish!).
Also a tablet isn't much use without apps, and the Play store has FAR more apps available than the Amazon one. Buy a Nexus 7, you can access both stores, buy a Kindle, you can only access the Amazon one.
Maybe some of the gambing sites have apps to use, instead of going to the desktop website. Maybe those apps are in the Play store and not the Amazon one. Have a look around.0
