Help please - Currys/PC World and VAX

:( Bought on line a VAX C89-P6N-P vacuum cleaner (cost £99.99) for just over 4 months and its broken. I collected the vacuum from the store. On Wednesday this week there was a strong burning smell and then a loud bang and the hover stopped working.

Currys/PC World will not offer me a refund as I have owned the hoover over 21 days and told me that I need to contact VAX direct. I explained I bought the vacuum from the store so shouldnt they issue a refund but the woman was adamant she would not refund me the money. The woman in Currys/PC World phoned VAX whilst I was in store and VAX said they would deliver me a new vacuumr. I explained I didnt' want a new vacuum as if a products breaks down after 4 months I have little faith in a replacement and requested a refund. VAX said they would not give me a refund as I bought the vacuum from Currys/PC World so I needed to pursue Currys/PC World for a refund.

Where do I stand please. Do I need to accpet the new VAX vacuum cleaner or can I get a full refund.

thanks for all replies and advice.

You are entitled to either a refund, replacement or repair from Currys/PC World. You can request any of these options, but they can decline if it is disproportionately costly - which is what they have done here.

You're right in that you can force Currys to offer the remedy, but they have done this here by going through Vax who are going to offer you the replacement, so Currys have held up their side of the bargain per the SoGA.

As such, I'm afraid you are going to have the accept the replacement, as legally this is all that you are entitled to.
  • Thanks for the advice.:D

If thats the case then once I recieve the the new vacuum I will stick it on fleabay and put the cash towards new vacuum cleaner but not VAX and never again will I step foot in Currys/PC World.

I think this is VERY unfair... Currys have held up their side of the deal and have ensured you have a working vacuum. It's highly likely that you got a flukey faulty model, and the replacement will be just fine.

I doubt many other retailers would have given you a refund - they in fact may only offer a repair, which I'm sure you would have been even less happy with. Even if a refund had been offered, they would have been allowed to pro rate it to take in to account the 4 months use you have had.

Without being rude, you may want to manage your expectations a little bit in future... I don't think it's fair to expect free use of a vacuum for 4 months and then be disappointed with the retailer who has done everything required of them in what appears to be an efficient and timely manner!
  • I don't think I'm being unfair. I think the woman who dealt with me was rude from the moment I approached the return/collection desk.

As far as I'm concerned Currys/PC World offerd poor customer service and simply pushed me on to VAX.

Dont' bother replying. Enjoy your weekend.

Would you really have preferred Currys/PC world to have dealt with this themselves?

If they did this, it could well involve you having to take the VAX to the store where the vacuum might then be examined to see if it could be repaired or sent off to Vax.
Vax could then either repair or replace the vacuum, something that could take a while to do, and the repaired or replacement item might be delivered back to the store and then delivered onto you.

Dealing directly with a manufacturer is often far easier and quicker than dealing with the retailer who sold you the goods.
  • To have the vacuum replaced has cost me £4. They can't replace it with the same model either.

Also the new vacuum will not have a 2yr guarantee but what is remaining from the purchase date of the guarantee.

What ever I get from the fleabay will go toward a Samsung or Dyson.

    Shove VAX and Currys.

So basically you will be getting a new vacuum and you will have had over 4 months use of the old one for only £4.
Also the new vacuum will not have a 2yr guarantee but what is remaining from the purchase date of the guarantee.
Which is the case for just about every manufacturer of just about every appliance sold in the UK.
The warranty will run from the initial date of purchase and not from the date of replacement.
What ever I get from the fleabay will go toward a Samsung or Dyson.
A Samsung or Dyson can go wrong just as easily as a Vax.

    A Dyson !!!!!
I worked for an electrical appliance repair company and 95% of broken vacs that came in were Dysons.

    Samsung, no idea.

Best vacuum in the world is a Henry Extra, goes on for years and years and years.
