Think the issue with red diesel is the storage. Ive had it in manky cans and drums and the mank ends up in the tank therefore blocking filters.0

how much cheaper is red diesel anyway? is it just ex-vat or are there duties and other taxes included in the net amount that we pay at the pump?0

A company claims fuel as tax expendable.
So no benefit to running red.
On these, start with the obvious.
The most onvious fault from description is the Crank sensor is goose.
They dont throw EML very easy on these.
Reset ECU to default load by disconnecting battery for an hour.
See if that changes anything.
Glow Plugs and glow plug relay, they stay on on half heat once started, if the relay is faulty they heat up, go cold and it cuts out heat up go cold and cuts out....
Then fuel filter then fuel pressure regulator.
Until these have been done ?.
But if it starts, runs until warm and conks, the Crank sensor is first culprit for integration.Be happy...;)0 -

I suppose it depends on where you get it from, most construction/farm equipment costs a pretty penny & I doubt they will be using "manky" diesel.
One of the best places to source it is a marina (if you're so inclined)

I have a vat registered business, I do reclaim VAT on fuel but VAT is only 20%.
For 1.29 at the pump the gross price is £1.075 (still a LOT more than red diesel and I used the current petrol price here,,
Yes it's all tax deductable, but that doesn't mean the cost doesn't matter. if you're paying £1.075 per litre rather than £0.65 per litre than that's more money out of the business and less profits for the business too.
btw.. you're either entitled to red diesel or you're not. So it's not like you have a real opportunity cost here. Just indicating that price matters in case some plod on here now accuses me of using red diesel (on my petrol car).:rotfl:0 -
All diesel now contains bio fuels as part of the "green incentive" the most common reused veg oil, theoretically the bio part can contain a so called "diesel bug" which is simply bacteria which causes a sludgy residue.
When the bio diesels first came out around a couple of years ago we were getting dire warnings that bulk tanks and overwinted equipment should be drained compleatly, there was lots of pricey additives being sold to kill the bug.... In all honesty it was millennium bug syndrome, the problem rarely exists.
Red diesel is just the same as its white counterpart, It varies from summer to winter with an anti waxing agent and thats it, Any off Highway vehicle can use it, but there are strict limits on what it can and cant be used for on road, there's also strange exemptions such as those with showman licences, billboard trucks, even certain motorway maintenance trucks are allowed to use it.
This summer I used circa of 50,000lts and the best price was 69.2, and the worst just of 75p, It has some duty on it but is except from the road tax as its an off highway fuel,
BTW, most tales of the dye being removed from red are just that, the iffy diesel people are normally sold in pubs is actually knocked of Kerosene from boilers.
HMRC have stopped marrina's from selling it, IIRC leisure craft cannot now legally use it but I may be corrected on this point.
Common rail engines are much more prone to fuel issues than there inline/rotary counterparts, because of the high rail pressures they can soon damage injectors and pump parts, so therefore the microns of the filters is smaller making them more prone to block.
Any mechanic worth his salt would first change the filters check for air leaks, damaged or blocked pipes, before moving on to any diagnostic work, another problem could be electrical when we I traveled to Newark last year my friends SWB90 cut out just pulling off the A2, a quick scout found the ignition barrel had cooked, I bodged it to get home, but apparently the fault had been intermittent for about 6 months. TBH being a landrover it proberbly came from the factory like that!!!0 -

Red diesel is available at most/all marinas but full duty is applied to diesel used for "cruising"....fuel used for cooking or heating is exempt & sold at the normal low rate.Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0
