car broke down on way home

Hi all please help.
Bought a land rover defender 130 from a guy who advertised on ebay and paid £11750 cash for it. It was a works vehicle and I bought it. He gave me a reciept for it from his own company, left his house for the 180 miles home. It broke down after just 65 miles. I managed to get it running again and made it to the next services where I joined the aa at roadside fot £150. They looked at it and it would run but cut out again. They wanted to recover it but wanted another £200 to take me home so drove it with it cutting out after every mile! Took it to my independent specialists and they struggling to find the fault!

What do I do??

Please help

Since you never bought it off a motor trader/dealer I suspect there's not much you can do apart from taking it to a proper Landrover specialist and get hooked up to their equipment. I could be wrong but even though you bought off a company it's still a private sale.

    Baffles me.

Its £300 odd for a 4x4 but I very much agree with this. Spending £12k on a private sale off eBay, you have to very much satisfy yourself you're not buying a lemon.

I'm afraid its caveat emptor with private sales UNLESS the vehicle was mis-described. Obviously if you get it to LandRover and it has serious faults but in the eBay ad, it was described as fantastic runner with no engine problems, then you might have a case, but generally with private sales, its tough.

Get it fixed and chalk this one up as an experience.

I'm doubtful the AA would have found any fault given the OP said....

Ive only ever had one bad car - and thats the one i was daft enough to waste money on an AA inspection for.

It spent more time in the garage than outside my house - and AA's response was - nowt to do with us gov.

I wouldn't like to think what stresses you have put on the car engine by forcing it , what you did . Doing that every one mile stop/start? On that kind of mileage and distance you covered ? I would firstly contact the seller of cars breakdown . So he's aware of it straightway , and don't mention the above of your actions , that might be perceived causing further damage . Hope-fully , your garage can find the problem regarding if it was sold to you in road worthiness state.

    Best of luck.
  • I couldn't see myself buying any car for £12k private. That sort of money, I'd want to see a dealer behind it.

A wreck for £2000 or under, fine. You pays yer money you takes your chance. But £12k!?!?

Given the symptoms, it sounds likely to be a fuel fault somewhere. But for that price I assume it's a fairly modern Landy - in which case it will be either a late Td5 or a Ford 2.4 engine, and a long way from the bulletproof 200Tdi and the like that we all used to rave about. I'm afraid a visit to a Land Rover dealer so they can hook it up to their diagnostics is the only way you are sure to get an answer, and that won't be cheap.

One of the reasons I wouldn't buy a new Land Rover any more. The days of simple and robust are long gone.

Bought a Landcruiser about 15 years ago for £11500 privately, it was the most reliable trouble free vehicle i've ever owned.

I do inspect thoroughly underneath though and do know what i'm looking at.

Give you a tip...first thing you look at is the tyres and the brakes as much as you can see through the wheels...if the tyres are cheap Chinese tat or sidewall scuffed mixed makes with nicks and scars, the wheels showing ingrained dirt thats been there forever and won't shift the only clean bits being the kerbing scrapes and the discs/calipers worn scabby scored and generally neglected then you know the car is going to be trouble.

If an owner obviously can't drive and neglects the most important and visible parts of their car its a fair bet the unseen parts are even worse.
