Change the valid date for MOT

  • Is this a wind up?

If you want the MOT to come up for renewal in May, take it in for a test in May. What is there not to understand?
  • If you have spare money in may why don't you put this aside in May (perhaps a little more than you have just been charged if you can afford it) Then you can book the MOT as you usually do.
Alternatively start putting a set amount aside each month fromDec/Jan. Divide the cost by 10/12 depending on how many months till test.

I used to hate one test which always fell in July - just before summer hols then tax was the same time. I soon learnt to budget!

  • If my car pass MOT on next week, I can book it for May 2014 MOT so I can have 12 months valid MOT certificate which it would expires in May 2015 instead of December? Yes. Ask an MOT centre to confirm this.

The reason for this, every time when I want to get my car ready for MOT, the rains comes every time when I want to do the work
If you are trying to avoid working on the car in bad weather moving the MOT to October gives you the summer to work on the car and only looses 2 months on the current December date.

I can totally understand someone being willing to "waste" part of a valid MOT in order to move the test to better weather. I do all the work on our cars and things that need doing in the middle of winter are not nice!

Chris - when you take your car for an MOT the system doesn't usually care if the old one is still valid. Mine was done in June this year and, if I wanted to, I could take it in today and they'd test it and give me a new certificate that would be valid until November 2014. Each test is valid for 12 months from the date it's done, but you can have a new test done at any time you like during that 12 months and that will also go for 12 months from the date of the (new) test.
Lots of local authorities demand that taxis in their area are tested every 6, or even every 3, months.

That's what you should do if you want to change the date. Get it passed now, then take it back in May and get them to test it again. You will then have a certificate which is valid until May 2015.

I think the OP want to MOT it in May and not not do it now.. Thats the issue.

No getting away from the fact it must be done now if they want to drive it. It will flag up no MOT on the police database if you pass a roadside or vehicle with the system installed.

  • I had a car bought from an auction with 6 months MOT on it.

I was given a free MOT from Halfords and the car passed.

My new MOT for 12 months ran from that date..

The simple answer is that you can MOT the vehicle any time you like.

It must be quite an old car to require 25% for the parking brake.
