Change the valid date for MOT
Hi guys
I took my car for a early MOT today, but unfortunately my car has failed MOT due to handbrake efficiency of 8% and I need to get 25% to pass mot. I have a little problem right here. Please read it on.
If my car pass MOT, I want to change MOT valid certificate date from December to May, because I want to get out of the way from winter due to bad weather condition and by the near time its Christmas so it will stress me out. The problem is MOT date will only valid for 12 months.
If I get a early MOT, it would mean that my next MOT valid date would expires in November 28th 2014, is that correct?
If so, how I can get MOT in May for each year? Do I have to be off the road for 6 months and get a new test certificate in May?
Or
If my car pass MOT on next week, I can book it for May 2014 MOT so I can have 12 months valid MOT certificate which it would expires in May 2015 instead of December?
The reason for this, every time when I want to get my car ready for MOT, the rains comes every time when I want to do the work at the same time which annoyed me and by the near time its Christmas, so it will cost me alot money for Christmas presents and the cost for repairing my car. I want to get out of the way which it will be alot easier for me so I would not have to worry anymore.
I hope you will understand this why I want to change the valid date for MOT.
Thanks in advance

I have my MOT expire on 17th November, which is OK because 18th October is still fairly warm.
I think you just need to do an MOT in May if you want the anniversary to change to May. Although I'd get it redone at September which is still warm and your current MOT gives you better "value for money".0 -
If you want to preserve the date of the MOT then you can do it a month in advance and have 13 month MOT.. but you can MOT it any time you want, you could do it every six weeks if you wanted to.0

Thanks for your reply. If my car pass MOT on next week, I can book for MOT in May 2014 to get a 12 months valid date?
If so, what about if my car pass next week I will get a 12 months MOT valid date?
They might not let me to take a retest in May 2014?0 -
Yes you can MOT it in May even if it passes next week. You could pass on Monday next week and MOT it on Tuesday if you wanted to and if it passed then MOT it on Wednesday etc etc etc.
You can MOT a car any day you want regardless of whether or not it has a valid MOT and how long that MOT has left.0 -
you book your car in to a garage and they MOT it.
whereabouts are you? not in Ireland are you as they might do it differently but if you're not then there's not letting or not letting you. You just book it in for it's MOT and when it passes the 12 months starts from then.0 -

Incorrect, MOT is never for 13 months. The anniversary date will stay the same.
E.g. if MOT expires on 15 Dec, whether you get the MOT done on 15 Dec or 16 Nov, it will still have the same anniversary date of 15 Dec 2014.0 -
@scheming_gypsy: I live in south east of London. If I want to book for May MOT as if my car pass next week, how I can get the MOT in May?
I don't think they will let me to have early MOT which the early one I could have is on October?
Do I need a new MOT certificate or do I just go and book the MOT for May with the 12 months valid MOT certificate if my car pass on next week?0 -

If your MOT is due on the 15th December and you get it done on the 16th November. How many months is that MOT certificate valid for?0 -

How I can have MOT in May if my car pass on next week?
Do I need to bring the 12 months valid certificate or do I need to get a new MOT certificate to get MOT in May?
They might not let me to have MOT in May with the 12 months valid certificate which the early MOT I could have is in November?
Sorry for the confused, but I have never dealt with this issue before.0 -

how? you book it in for an MOT with your local garage.
they don't let you or not let you.
In May just phone the garage and ask to book your car in for an MOT. They'll do it and then might tell you that the MOT doesn't run out for another x months. When you tell them you want to move it away from Christmas they'll just shrug their shoulder, say ok, give you the new MOT and your car keys.
Same as if you wanted to sell the car and it had 2 months MOT. You can put it through and sell with 12 months0
