There is absolutely no reason why you should feel bad about not going. Be honest with her - you can't afford the fare, you will be sorry not to see her, but if she would like to she can come up to see you. You can't go on being the only one to make an effort for the next ten years can you?
Is she a "one and only" friend, or do you have plenty social life without her?
  • I think you have to look at how important this friendship is

If you enjoy one anothers company and want to keep seeing one another, then you might have to stick with the one sided nature of where you meet.

However, if this is causing you bother, you might have to let this friendship go new ones are made throughout your life and just because she has been a best friend does not mean she always needs to be

Simply tell her the truth, you've worked it out and you can't afford it. If she gets all hot and bothered about it, delicately point out that you are always the one travelling and that if she would still like to see you, maybe she could make the effort for once.

It takes two to tango, be it sex or friendships.
  • I've just told her I can't go....she was fine about it and said we would work something out in the next few months....I still feel bad and I cried when I got off the phone with her. I've got myself in such a state today.....thanks for all your help everyone :)
  • It sounds one sided to me you doing all the running. She needs to be visting you as well otherwize its not fair is it. If shes not prepared to why not just stick to Skype and facebook/phone? Or think about if its worth it.

My friend knew two people who went to liverpool and both were the victim of crime.

Maybe your friend is wary about this but is afraid to say something?

The stories certainly put me off

Seriously? I live half an hour from Liverpool and I go shopping in Liverpool often and I feel safer there than I do in my own town. She isn't wary I can assure you :) don't let stories put off going anywhere.....only judge somewhere on your own experience :)

My friend is very reliable and see no reason why she would lie. Although I've never spoken to the two people she referred to.

Crime happens in many cities and towns in the UK, I live 15 miles from Glasgow. If you thought about it too much you'd never go anywhere.
