That is the worst thing you can do to a car, a car needs to be driven when started not just parked up.

Only if it is likely to overheat.

Takes me a few minutes to de-ice mine i use water put in 4 pint milk bottles the night before, been doing this since i could drive, many years.

Do you do this on a public road? If so do you mop up the water left behind after it has run down your windscreen? Because if so and it freezes and causes an accident for someone else - you could be held liable.

Most engine wear occurs during cold running. The faster you get the engine temp up, the less wear will occur. Idling is the slowest way to raise engine temp.

Where did you get that from? It sounds nonsense to me for several reasons.

I have done it if I am next to the drain outside my house and pushed the water away down it with an old squeegy. Or if you have some grit you could stick a little of that down after you have done.

As the metal components heat up they expand so are under more pressure, as the oil heats up it becomes thinner so is less shock absorbing (though it is slippier), as you drive the components are under load while still cold, cold metal is more brittle than hot metal. You should drive gently when setting off with a cold engine for this very reason, driving gently heats up your engine more slowly than driving hard.

The cars optimal operating temp is 90 deg the sooner it gets there the better.
Sitting on tickover is not going to get it warm, as if you were driving it.

Totally with you on the gentle driving when cold.

My Volvo heats up pretty quickly on tickover, sems faster than when being driven - possibly due to no airflow across engine form car speed, and most of the energy ending up as heat, but they are built for a colder climate than ours.
