What counter claim? Op can't now pursue the customer for payment of a cylinder head he's now sold.

I wouldn't ignore it - if he does file a claim it could be massively inconvenient for you, as a business you will have to travel to his local court.
Reply making it clear the goods was as described, any consequential losses are down to his or his mechanics own negligence in diagnosing the issue correctly and any claim will be defended. Also tell him you will counter claim for your costs such as travel and time, itemise it to make it clear loosing the case could have adverse affects on him.
Also he can't just demand you pay his garage bill, a most you'd be liable for consequential losses (which I don't think is the case here), such as EXTRA labour etc. He would have had to pay initial labour, parts etc irrespective so its not a consequential loss!0
