E7 Meter ? EDF

Comments

  • Think you may find EDF will change meter free of charge, tho you have to keep that meter for at least a year.

However, they told me this morning my economy 7 hours could be between 2200hrs to 0800hrs, dependent on National Grid, tho usually between 1200 and 0700.

I wonder that as well , the combi boiler was installed in 2010 and the water tank removed (used to be warm air)

It's common for gas boilers to be installed and the old E7 wiring/meter still remains because noboddy realises the implications.
Your supplier neither knows nor cares what heating system you have or when you change it-they simply bill you based on your meter serial number.
Your tariff is the same one (Price Freeze March 2017), but for your metering the rates are split rate peak and cheap, as with all E7 billing. The tariff will not change with a new single rate meter, they will just update the serial number, and from that date you should then be billed on single rate.

but the fact remains , if i dont or cant use E7 , i will pay MORE than the same tariff on a single meter?!

I t would depend on your usage, so its not definite, but your probably right.

As other posters have stated EDF will change your meter for free as long as it doesn't invlove any extra work than just a meter swap.

Or they can offer to totaliser your meter, this means you keep an E7 meter but EDF's back end will merge the 2 E7 registers together and bill you as if you have a Standard meter. From other posts on here its obvious not all call centre bods know how to do this, so it may require a few calls to get the right agent!

    Good Luck!
  • From posters who advised on here in the past 20% to 30 % night usage of your total kwhr is the break even number on single rate billing. If the timer which controls the 7 hours is askew, as many are it would throw the cheap rate ( normally between 12 am and 8 am ) into a more usable section. Most meters have a way of indicating when the low rate is in progress, blinking curser or reading or show just say " rate now. A lot just display the rate in progress only

The meter should have been changed then.

    yes, should've been changed then.

A lot of folk rip out electric storage heaters (E7), never think about getting the meter changed to a domestic tariff.

    Sell the house.

Then the new owners take over, come on here and ask 'why am I on E7, I don't have electric storage heaters' then kick an argument with their supplier when the first bill comes in.

You must check when you move into a new house, just exactly what your electric, gas set up is, saves a lot of hassle later on.

I agree and thanks , i will ask for a meter swop out from EDF , i appreciate now that i didnt understand this particular issue when buying the house (only been in 8 weeks)

  • I had my meter changed so I could pay DD in new flat. When I saw on letter it said E7 I asked about it. It will not benefit me. Last look at meter it had rate 1 30units and rate 2 3 units!! Do not think it will benefit me. even the person I spoke to could not understand why it was E7! I have a combi.

Yes, because that's how E7 is designed- 7 hours cheap night rate is offset by the expensive day rate. The supplier is not responsible for your heating arrangements or meter type-you are. You chose to buy a property with E7 metering where the heating and hot water systems have been subsequently changed and are now unsuitable.
The meter may well have been replaced recently under the rolling exchange programme. But that process does not include inspecting your property to see if you have the right sort of heating system for your meter. That process is up to you.
