Hi , i signed up with EDF 6 weeks ago for the price freeze 2017 fix , they have written to me yesterday to tell me , its become apparent i have an E7 Credit meter rather than a Standard Credit meter , and as such will no longer benefit to the tune we/i thought

Not onyl have i wasted 6 weeks whilst every man and his dog increases prices , i now have a choice of having to shop around again!

What is a E7 meter and is there anyway of getting it changed ? (it looks brand new and its EDF branded!)

Cheers

An E7 meter is a dual rate meter and is intended for properties with an immersion heater and night storage heaters. It offers 7 hours cheap rate power at night (and a higher day rate than single rate as a consequence). If you have gas CH and DHW then it is unlikely to save you money over a single rate meter.
EDF won't merge dual rate readings for a single rate tariff, so you need to ask them to change the meter: if chargeable then it's typically about £60. It may well be a new meter, that makes no difference..
You haven't 'wasted 6 weeks', you can still have that same tariff, but you'll be billed on dual rate until the meter is changed. Price Freeze March 2017 is still available (and hasn't 'increased prices'-it's a fix).
If you have an E7 meter serial number, then you are defaulted to E7 billing-there's no way around that. Was it not obvious from the dual register that it was not a single rate meter?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

thanks , but the letter says the tariff for E7 is higher than the tariff i signed up for , so i am now paying more than anticipated ?

I dont have storage heaters not a hot water tank

I wouldnt have a clue mate :o , i just assumed it was a meter of some description that was installed for reasons the enegry company would know , tbh i thought economy 7 was something from my childhood!

So would any energy company have put me on their version of E7 then based on the meter type ?

Just another expense i guess getting it changed

Yes. Though some will take a merged reading.

I wonder why it's there at all? Must have been requested by the previous occupants.

I wonder that as well , the combi boiler was installed in 2010 and the water tank removed (used to be warm air)

The meter should have been changed then.

There is no need to automatically dismiss E7 where you have a gas boiler. It can still be a sensible option.

I dont want electrical items running in the middle of the night , so E7 doesnt look like the right option for our family

True, but it takes some effort and you have to stick to it!

If you are not willing to shift your usage to overnight, or you think you may give up on it after time, you are best to get the meter switched out.
