As far as bag packing goes I've done it with scouts and guides over the years and never been asked by the supermarket for a % of takings.

I think this is a classic tale of half truths and third party reporting. As far as I know, "some" supermarkets make a charge IF the charity or group want them to count and bank the money (to cover the staff wages for time spent, security and the bank charges of depositing the cash). If the charity or group are happy to take the money away with them and count/bank it themselves, then the supermarkets generally won't charge. Common sense really.

Been bagpacking with Scouts at Asda & they've *added* to our collection, not taken it away.
(That a good third of our leaders are Asda employees may contribute further to that.)

I find it really irritating with charity bag packers on the tills. I'd rather pay them NOT to pack my bags.

That's what I do. Just say, "no thanks" and give them a donation anyway. More often than not it is kids doing the packing and they haven't a clue - eggs in bags with tins etc.

Our Air Cadets do Tesco, Sainsbury and Asda, and none of them ever take any money for them doing it. They also do bag packs in the stores on behalf of the RBL in the run up to Rememberance Day, and again, they just all leave at the same time wth the collection pots/buckets and no one has ever asked for anything.

We do have a good relationship with the stores, as the Cadets are all very well behaved polite young people (well our SQN is). And Sainsburys allow us to do drill practice on the car park whenever we want.
  • When I did bagpacking with school we were told for a small fee we could have the money we'd taken counted etc and changed for us (Given in 20 notes rather than loads of pennies!)

Have to agree with those who say they hate bag packers though - I might just be neurotic, but I have a system of how I want things to go, so I can put them away easier when I get in and bag packers disrupt that terribly! Always chuck a pound in anyway, as goodwill.

A site I used to use did a research and discussion with the NSPCC - you would be amazed how little they do with a LOT of money.

they also collect in Scotland, but three or so years ago did NOTHING there at all.

I think the bigger ones really do bear having a look at if you donate to them - big offices in London and highly paid executives but delivering no services on the ground seems to be a bad use of money to me.
  • I've taken part in bag packs at Marks and Morries with my Scout Group and one of the stores (can't remember which sorry) did ask that a percentage of the collection went to their nominated charity of the year. This may be the case for other stores and the reason the OP believes that supermarkets charge a % to collect in them.

  • Personally I hate charity bag packers and look for a till without one, if that's not available I ask them to let me do it. It's annoying because they usually do it badly (bag packing - everything in it's place !!!!!!) and also because I don't carry cash so I can't give them anything anyway.

I don't hate charities or the local groups, but I just don't want them there when I'm doing my shopping.
