Retailer charged me for a service without telling me

Options
I recently purchased a rather expensive mobile phone from a local branch of a national retailer.

The phone I purchased used a micro sim, rather than a mini sim like my old phone, so I asked if it would be possible to cut the sim to fit the new phone. The colleague replied that it would be no problem, and went to cut the sim for me. About 20 seconds later they came back with the sim card. As it was a very simple and quick task, and I wasn't informed of any cost, it never crossed my mind that I would be charged for this.

However, when I checked the receipt later, I found that I had in fact been charged for the cutting of the sim card.

It wasn't a huge sum of money that I was charged, but I'd say it was excessive considering it only took a few seconds. If I had been informed that it was going to cost this much, I wouldn't have accepted the service.

I didn't see any signage in the store about a charge for sim card cutting, and the colleague didn't inform me of any cost, which is why I am annoyed about this.

Is there anything I can do to reclaim the money or get some sort of goodwill from the retailer?

It may well have taken just a few seconds, but did you see if there was any expensive machinery or tools involved that allows him to perform this task in super quick time?

Tools, equipment, premises, skills, etc. all have to be paid for.

I do agree though, they should've mentioned the price before continuing.

Costs £2 at my local market
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

They did mention a cutting machine, suppose it might have been rather expensive.

Still very expensive for something that I could have done with a £2 tool from ebay, or even with scissors.

    A) You asked them to do it.
    B) you didnt ask how much
    C) you paid and din't ask what the extra was for

but it was all the retailers fault. Naughty shop.

Wish i had a shop full of customers like you that don't know what they are spending.

I never said it was the retailer's fault.

I think that would be a reasonable assumption though... particularly as you asked...

    I suppose so.

I thought that legally the retailer was responsible for informing the customer how much things will cost, and not up to the customer to ask, is this correct or am I mistaken there?

I dont know if its law but I go on the assumption the retailer should inform me of the cost so I can decide whether I get them to carry out the job or not and I also am responsible for asking about the cost if the retailer doesn't mention it.

It would cut both ways the retailer go on the assumption the customer should ask them about the cost.

If the retailer does not give a price then you should of asked what it would cost
