Fair, I had seen it on Facebook and Twitter so thought people may know.

but not everyone will have facebook or twitter, if they want local businesses supported then they should be advertising on National TV/Radio and National Newspapers and on Public Transport. This is where most shoppers would see the campaign message

I guess it answers the question about people being involved in the day - clearly there is no interest.

to get interest it must be widely know, if no one knows about it then how can it get interest

Yes, you are right. I wonder if they thought that the local businesses would get on board and advertise it locally.

I understood that the idea was for each company to take some responsibility for letting their customers know about the day, advertising it and encouraging customers to think about their local independents by special offers and the likes.

Maybe I misunderstood? I don't work for them - I just feel in theory it is a good idea, maybe I'm just misguided?

like all these ideas, they may be good, but they dont know how to implement them. they still need to advertise it so to get businesses on board in the first place.

a simple solution is that 99% of businesses have business bank accounts and all businesses should be registered with HMRC, so get them onboard and have them send out a flyer about the day and how businesses could join to all registered businesses

It'd have been helpful if the OP hadn't assumed everybody knew what this was about .... it's not something I've heard of. Maybe it's just in one town/region.
    Not just me then ...

I'm on Facebook, but only for very close family. Ditto Twitter. I do support small businesses, but this is the first I've ever heard of it.

I prefer to support small local businesses the other 364 days too TBH - if we supported one another more we'd not be in such a financial pickle!

+ if local authorities did not give planning for these mega supermarkets then local businesses would not suffer.

When Asda purchased our towns football ground to build a mega supermarket across the road to their previous site. the plans were for them to build their supermarket and then develop the whole of the other side of the road ( old store, bus station , various other business premises), but guess what happened when the plans for the mega supermarket were approved, their other plans for their old store etc. have never happened.

Well I am glad some more people now know about it!

I think I may do something for it - at the end of the day it costs nothing and if it helps remind people to shop locally then it is surely better than saying 'I didn't know about it' or 'People need to support us' and then doing nothing.

I'm not saying that's what others do here before anyone gets cross! It's just how I feel about it. I'm just keen on putting my own words into actions!

Highjewelgreen - I'd be interested to hear if it effects your business at all, if you would be happy to share?

    Thanks

It's a real shame when others don't feel the need to support their small local businesses, but each to their own I guess.

I do support local businesses, I have employed several local tradespeople for various projects around house and garden. I was a regular customer of a local secondhand bookshop, but books I now read tend not to be available in this shop and have to be sourced online. My hairdresser is a small local business. Also sometimes use local ethnic restaurants/takeaways, which are family owned and run.

Also OH spends a lot of money on fruit/veg in local market, all the traders are small businesses, fairly local.

But as I said in my first post I won't patronise a business just because it is small and local, it has to fulfill other requirements.

The nearest grocery shops to me are Martin McColls, Aldi, Budgens, Lidl, Waitrose and Tesco.
