Install fails and restores previous version
Sorry - no fix here but.
    1. did it fail straight away or after ages?
    2. log file MAY give a clue
    C:\windows\panther
(or file setupact.log; don't include the whole lot here but could paste the last few -20- lines say)
    3. if you feel like a break, 8.1 doesn't have to be installed for a couple of years!
    4. laptop make and model please

Try a direct download of Win 8.1 from MS
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/upgrade-product-key-only
Assuming that you have the licence key and don't mind risking formatting your HDD ?
ie) Back everything up before trying this !!

I have a vague recollection of some Win 8 updatesd taking an age to complete some time ago. As this is a new machine the chance are it is miles behind on updates and you are probably installing the ones I recall. I'll do a search to see if I can find anything and if so add a link here. I can't remember if the download progress stuck or not though.

Well nothing jumped out although there were complaints about updates on Win 7.

Here is a Microsoft response to a complaint like yours that may or may not be useful...

Thanks for the follow-up replies. I'll do all the Win 8 updates tonight THEN try 8.1 update again.

If that still fails I'll consider the full install. How big is it, and can it be installed from USB? (The laptop doesn't have a DVD drive).

Laptop is an HP Pavilion TouchSmart 11-e002sa Laptop, AMD A6, 4GB RAM, 500GB, 11.6” Touch Screen, Black and Silver, bought from John Lewis.

Install failed after a reboot and going through all the install process (devices, apps etc.). That's what makes me think about the EULA acceptance ... I was NOT presented with such a prompt, so it didn't record acceptance and so reverted.

I'll take a look at the log file tonight too.

I doubt the issue is anything to do with the EULA. HP has a link on upgrading which doesn't say anything new other than advising to install updates which, I guess, is a good idea. (even suggests updating all store items which is a real pain).

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&dlc=en&docname=c03847367&lc=en&product=5446962&tmp_track_link=ot_search

Note the above has warnings about KB2756872 or KB2770917 which are problematical so keep an eye out for problems with them.

EDIT: I know you're probably fed up with updates but also on the link above goto the top of the page select Drivers and Scan now to get the latest HP updates. Chances are the 8.1 update is failing because of a duff HP wireless (or other) driver.

If you want to install Win 8.1 from USB stick - you will need an ISO of the file - but as far as I can discover, that link (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/upgrade-product-key-only) only allows installation on the PC that it is being installed on !
If it is downloadable - it is a 4.7Gb file - designed for a DVD - but, obviously will load on to a bootable USB stick - using MS utility (http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool)
I have yet to go beyond the "pre-download" stage - because I am concerned that if I do try running the pre-download "download" - it may wipe my HDD - So I will try downloading it from another PC at work (decent connection) later this afternoon.....
It is 4.7Gb - so will fit on a single DVD

Reading the HP link, which shows the update process, I never get as far as step 6 (accept the EULA). So something else is holding back the update process.

I'll do all the updates as mentioned before (including drivers) then try again. :)

Don't panic, this is very normal for Windows 8 (and sometimes Windows 7). It will sit at 0% and then all of a sudden spring to 99%. Shutting it down will actually stop it and chances are you are starting again over and over.

There is a way to check it is actually doing something however. Right click the task bar and choose task manager. Press the more details button to get it to show you the proper task manager options. At the top click on the performance tab and then you will see what your CPU, Memory, HDD and network connections are doing. If it is downloading updates you should see that Disk is currently very busy, possibly up to 100% usage. During idle operation this will sit at 0% so you can check by starting task manager before you start the update process. If the disk becomes busy a short while after you start the update you know it is writing files.

I had the same problem when I first tried to do a Windows 8 update and now I have done loads of them on different systems and they all do this. Just have patience and as long as the Disk is busy it will eventually get done. I think new systems need around 700MB of updates now so depending on your internet connection this could take anything from 5 - 30 minutes to complete but when it gets to the end you will notice it will jump to 99% and then complete before starting to install.

Once you have updated the system fully you will then be able to update to 8.1 via the store. Hopefully Microsoft will fix the 0% update issue at some point, perhaps they already have, but they will likely do it via Windows update so you will need to use it anyway to fix it if that makes any sense.

I have bought a new laptop for my daughter. It has Windows 8 installed. (I don't think it is 8.1 but I'm not sure). When I run Windows Update it finds many such updates. After clicking the button to start the download/install the download progress bar just keeps scrolling across and the result stays at 0KB of XXMB downloaded.

The internet connection is fine. (I can browse websites at the same time).

    Any ideas?

Restart your windows and try again.
