Windows 8 Updates - Download Progress

Options
I have bought a new laptop for my daughter. It has Windows 8 installed. (I don't think it is 8.1 but I'm not sure). When I run Windows Update it finds many such updates. After clicking the button to start the download/install the download progress bar just keeps scrolling across and the result stays at 0KB of XXMB downloaded.

The internet connection is fine. (I can browse websites at the same time).

Any ideas?

How long have you given it to start the download ?
    reboot and try again
  • And after you have rebooted give it at least 10 minutes to start to download

The obvious thing to do is to go to the store and download the 8.1 upgrade, this effectively reloads the entire operating system.

    Check operating system here.

I take it an MS account will be needed to download from the store? (I set up the laptop with a local account - I'll let my daughter configure her own MS account when she gets it next weekend. [It's a birthday present, and she's visiting next weekend]).

Does the update download and run from the C: drive? Or does it need to be copied to an external location? (There's no DVD drive on this laptop). If external I presume a USB drive will suffice?

As regards waiting ... I haven't waited 10 minutes - I'm used to Windows 7 at least starting to download pretty quickly - but I did wait a few minutes.

    Thanks for the replies.

Ignoring whether you have 8 or 8.1 for a moment, try the microsoft update fix tool
    http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9830262

(or, if you don't trust my link, get there via http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2700567/en-us
scroll down to Windows 8 resolution)

EDIT: the 8.1 update is "got" from the store which you'll need an account to access. It downloads the update to local storage. And it takes ages (3.5GB) if you have a slow internet connection. Let's hope you have 8.1 already.
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

    Well what a palaver!

I already have a MS account so I created a new user on the laptop and linked it to my MS account. I gave this user Admin rights. Then ...
    • You can't see the 8.1 update until you install update KB 2871389
    • You can't install KB 2871389 until you've run the Fixit utility (which installs 12 updates)
    • Once KB 2871389 is installed you can see 8.1 in the Store
    • You click to download 8.1 (3.25GB or thereabouts)
    • It says you'll be presented with a dialog to accept new terms, if you don't accept the previous version will be restored
    • IT DOESN'T PRESENT YOU WITH THAT EFFING DIALOG!
    • Install fails and restores previous version

    TWICE!

So how the hell do I get 8.1 installed? Do I need to have 8 FULLY UPDATED before I can do 8.1?

I just updated my new Win 8 laptop via that EVIL panel thing on the desktop - and also installed Classic Shell to try to rid my world of the same abomination !!
I have no idea whether Win 8 was updated prior to carrying out this operation - but it did download a huge file (over 3GB) and luckily it installed straight away ....
Hey presto ... Win 8.1 (which hardly seems any different to Win 8 - certainly not 3GB worth) - what is the difference ?
As far as it affects me - the return of a <START> button and minor mods to the desktop - what else ? bearing in mind the fact that my laptop does not have a touch screen .....

According to this (item 2.4) I should make sure all updates are applied before starting the 8.1 update. :(
