Cash credit into my bank account

Hi all

I have just checked my bank account online and see £150.00+ has been paid in cash into my account. I have recently sold my house so there is a few credits been paid into my account but I wasnt expecting this one.

I have had a look on the statement but it just says "cash credit" so I have no further details.

I guess my duty is to call the bank and enquire about it, the devil on my shoulder wonders what you would do in this situation?

But also, what do the bank do if I do ring them? How would they track down the account it should have been paid in to if someone went in to a branch and paid cash into an account, but it was paid into mine? I assume it was either an error on the part of the payee (writing down the incorrect number) or an error on the part of the cashier.

Thanks in advance.

Which bank is it? Some show any electronic payment credits in as a cash credit until their systems update the next day (although I can't remember which ones they are off the top of my head).

Are you with Nationwide? (sounds like it as the basic statement online says 'cash credit')

If so click "View Full Statement" at the bottom and it'll show you in more detail who it is from.

There is no more detail that can be given, other than 'cash credit'.

I'd phone up the bank and ask which branch it was paid in at (this may jog your memory? Maybe there's someone who has your account number but for whatever reason didn't pay the money in electronically?).

Otherwise there's nothing you can do.
  • Yes it is Nationwide and there isnt any more information.

I am pretty sure I have had all my credits back from people who owed anything, so pretty confident it is not mine.

But if, for arguments sake, it was cash paid into a branch and either the payee or cashier wrote the account down wrong how would it be rectified.

In a round about way I am basically trying to find out if they can just take it back out of my account? I havent and dont plan on spending it but it would be a nice little "bank error in my favour" if it stays in there.

    Thanks

I would imagine that you will eventually find that it was a credit that really was meant for you. It's most unlikely that it would have been a cash deposit to someone else's account that was entered incorrectly - for one thing the chances of getting an account number wrong but valid are low, and for another I'm not sure that Nationwide would even accept a cash deposit without either a card or some other proof of where it should go.
  • I will give them a call tomorrow morning and see where it has come from and just see.

Thanks for the help, I was quite confused when I saw the payment coming in.

I will take a guess that it is a refund of all or part of a mortgage payment you made.
I remember the same thing happening with my Nationwide account when I changed mortgage provider some years back.

Whenever I have paid cash in over the counter at Nationwide - they have their own "deposit" slip that the cashier uses. I noticed they fill in the account number on it, plus the breakdown of the notes.

It may not help you, but may help Nationwide track it down at the branch if they wanted to pursue further.
  • I rang the customer services number and they couldnt tell me any further information than what I already knew - cash paid into a branch.

He said that any queries should normally be resolved within 5 working days. I asked him what I do next and he just said leave it and if its still there then its up to me what I do with it.

I said to him I didnt want to get into any trouble for keeping money that possibly (more than likely) isnt mine.

I have transferred the exact amount into a savings account and will just leave it unless asked for it.

I have done what I can by asking them about it and pointing out it "may" not be mine.
