Could he tell you which branch?

That would help narrow things down!
  • He said that there was no other information attached to the payment. Or he just couldnt be bothered to find out any more information for me.

So I assume that if it is still there in another month or two chances are it was either meant for me for something I cant remember and will do shortly or it was a genuine bank error in my favour.

Never ceases to amaze me how casually branch staff treat these sorts of error. Quite a few threads over the last year or so, of errors such as this. I'm still £100+ up from an "error in my favour" a couple of years ago -and the bank (NatWest) never came back to me after I reported it!
  • Hopefully I am in the same position as you.

    Are they treating it "casually"?

Or do they just not have the autonomy, level of responsibility, time or training to be able to investigate properly?
  • Casually then.

I suspect a mixture of the two.
  • Mystery solved, I received a letter from Nationwide today to say they underpaid me on a recent PPI settlement and had credited the remaining money into my account. So it was from them all along. At least I get to keep it.

If they don't care enough to give their staff the level of responsibility and the resources to deal with matters adequately, then that's "casually" in my book.
