I am with Rolo on this one having worked 15 years in England. there are no major differences in our culture. We may like to think we are different but the differences are minor. It is just that some of the threads posted are of no interest to people regardless of where they live in the UK hence non/low response in the DT Forum. It has nothing to do with differences in culture but more to do with the 'interest value' of the thread.Val

I also have worked in other parts of UK and yes IMO there are some differences but not massive differences - depends on the person.
thats the key, you can`t really see wee Sammy from Dee street blending in with the local populace from the Kensington area now can you - however if it were Winthorp from Cultra..
... well maybe0 -
The problems on this forum boil down to one individual with too much time on their hands and a rather bigoted agenda.0

I'm unsure of the options, does a "No" vote result in things staying as they are and a "Yes" vote mean a new DT section will be formed in the NI section?0

No. It means nothing There is a discussion board already. I can't see the owners paying out for a new board just for a couple of people who don't understand that0 -

To me Northern Ireland seems like a small island where people do not accept change easily. It has 26 local councils for 1.6 million people while Birmingham has 1 council for 1.07 million people - admittedly we plan to reduce this to 11 or is it 15? Hard to keep up. We still have local weekly papers where a couple of pages are detailing the activity in the local magistrate's court this week. We demand personal privacy but love gossip. We take much more pride in our environment than other parts of UK and ROI but at the same time get on our high horses when told what we can and cannot do with our environment. We have maintained a high degree of independant retail outlets and fight against the big boys coming to Sprucefield and damaging the wealth of the independent retailers while arguing about the lack of choice we often get. We complain about our traffic congestion being the worst in the UK and still have silly little A roads masquerading as motorways - if I were to try and label the differences I would say we are a people with one foot in the 19th century and the other in the 20th century - but only just!John0 -
I agree that we do have our differences from other parts of the UK. But then again the Welsh, Scots and English could also highlight differences between each country. The only difference is that they do not hijack a moneysavingexpert website to air those differences. If they have a non-money relatic topic they post it in the designated area of the web site i.e the DT section.
You would not join a dating website or a travel review website and post threads about religion, politics etc in the country areas of those websites. So why do it in a money saving expert website?
The reason why we should stick to money saving related threads is spelt out in the Forum guidelines which reads:
What's wrong with going off-topic?
The purpose of this site is to help people save money. So we'd prefer people to keep MoneySaving discussions on the main boards on topic. Taking them off-topic can be confusing for new users, while in discussions linked to from the weekly email, guides, news stories and blogs, it makes it especially difficult for people to find the information they want.Val
