MIL set me a task to find a replacement for her Qasqhai and I thought she had settled on a Sportage. She then moved the goalposts and upped her spend and bought a Tiguan.

What really annoyed me was she had given me very specific instructions and price limits, and was rather nonplussed when I just said that will be fine...

My boss did exactly the same!

I think you misunderstand. The short delivery times most probably relate to the high demand for the product.

I think I possibly understand a little but more about DRP, MRP and leadtimes than the average poster on here.
Short delivery times on manufactured goods are as a result of an inefficient supply chain or poor forecasting.
If the sales forecast is too high, you end up with too many products being made.
If the manufacturing forecast is too high, you end up with a warehouse full of parts.

While 44,649 Qashqais may have been registered this year in the UK (up until the end of October), that does not mean very much if you weigh it up against production capacity or the high levels of discount being offered by dealers
Either it's overpriced or they are very keen to ship out all the vehicles already manufactured which are just sitting there costing the company money.
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

Based on test driving and living with both (for a week) i ended up buying the Yeti.

Build quality was better, roof line was better for rear seat passengers and the mpg was better.
O and you got more for your money, which never hurts.

    That was 3 years ago.

If i was buying now i'd probably want another look at the QQ as they've dropped it slightly, changed the seating angles and properly updated it including the engines.

The Yeti F/L is just a bit of a tart up and the engines are a bit behind (especially the diesels).

I had high hopes for the suzuki s-cross but the rear roof line would give anne boleyn problems sitting in the back.

With efficient supply chain processes, they should be making to order. Target would be 21days from order to delivery to dealer. If it's under 14, you're selling stock, not manufactured.

As I said earlier, it's possible that I know a little bit more about supply and demand than the average poster.

    Nissan runs SAP.

I had edited before you replied. I misunderstood the original post. Completely misread it as meaning something else.

I bought a Qashqai for my parents. My wife has a Sportage and her sister has a Yeti.

My parents chose the Qashqai because it was available with 2wd and an autobox. My mum preferred the mumsy styling. They are very impressed with it although my dad finds the passenger seat very uncomfortable.

My wife chose the Sportage based mainly on its looks, the sunroof and the full size spare. I find the passenger seat a bit hard.

My wife's sister bought the Yeti because it was available in 2wd with an autobox and because of it's safety features, although how these improve on the Nissan or Kia I don't know. I've not been in it yet, so I can't comment on how comfortable the passenger seat is.

Renault Lagunas and Meganes are popular, with many well documented reliability issues (often affecting the DCi diesel engines also fitted to the Nissan range).

As I said, I know a number of people who work in the Nissan plant, including some senior shop-floor people and people concerned with quality control; and they tell enough warning stories to put me off. Nissan quality ain't what it used to be, I assure you. The number of recalls affecting British built Nissans over the last few years is alone enough to re-inforce my view.

Hence; faced with the choice between the 'not-quite German build quality' with 'pretty-much German materials' of Nissan, or the 'German build quality' with 'Nissan materials' of Skoda, I'll take the Skoda every time.

(just for fun, of the ~20 people I know who work for Nissan, 6 work in QC or senior-line positions - guess how many of those drive a Nissan? It isn't 6.)

Your info is not fully accurate

The troublesome engine in the Megane/Laguna was the old 1.9dci lump.

And it transpired that the main issue was lack of compliance to the service schedule.

They were not the best but made worse by the above.

Nissan Qashqui is as well built as anything else these days.

Stick with the 1.5dci lump and you won't go far wrong. Been fitted in many vand and cars in one form or another for the best part of 20 years

Wifes Clio dci has been reliable. Airbag light came on which is a common fault concerning the plug under the seat but is now approaching 110k. It does get oil changes sooner than manufacturer intervals. Sometimes 5/6k sometimes i leave it 10k always specify Mobil 1/ELF/Castrol or other good quality Full Synth.

If you want to discuss reliability. Look into DSG box failures and oil pump issues on VAG 2.0 diesels.

No maker if immune from problems. Some just have better PR within the middle class motoring press that think the only mistake VAG ever made was continuing to build the Phaeton.
