    I voted for the quamquat.

Yeti is boring to look at.

Qasqhai is also British made which is nice.

Sport age is nicer to look at than either though.

    Freelander??

MIL set me a task to find a replacement for her Qasqhai and I thought she had settled on a Sportage. She then moved the goalposts and upped her spend and bought a Tiguan.

What really annoyed me was she had given me very specific instructions and price limits, and was rather nonplussed when I just said that will be fine...

We went Tiguan as well, extremely pleased.
  • I faced this choice earlier this year, I went for the Qasqai 1.5 dCi in 360 spec. I'm very happy with the Qasqai and delivery was 7 days, most of the other contenders I was looking at were on a much higher wait IIRC 2 months for a Sportage or iX35, and 6months for a Mokka, not sure on the Yeti as I din't look at them (not my thing I'm afraid) the VW Tiguan was ruled out due to price or to be precise, what level of trim/toys I would get for the money I wanted to spend, or in the case of the Tiguan I'd have ended up with poverty spec, no steering wheel controls, no cruise control, no sat nav, no USB media socket, no reversing sensors, no panoramic roof, no front fogs, no half leather trim, no leather trimmed steering wheel and no climate control, all the stuff that was standard on the Qashqai 360 for the same money.

  • Knowing people who work at the Nissan plant and hearing some of the stories about quality control, personally I'd go for the Yeti.

    Likewise.

...when we were looking a few months ago, we ended up chosing the Tiguan, sure it's lower spec for the money, but my experience of Renault/Nissan quality control is such that I wouldn't touch the Qashqai. It's slightly better on the inside than the Joke, but not by much.

    The questions would be:
    1. What are your requirements?
    2. What is your budget?
    3. How long do you intend to keep the car?
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

I was looking at this segment earlier this year when looking for a replacement for my CRV.

Qashqai wasn't really anywhere near the top of my list. It was the last one I had a look at. But when I took it for a drive it immediately went straight to the top of my list. The two main reasons were:

    1) It was so much more comfortable to sit in than anything else I had seen

    2) It comes in a 1.6 petrol engine. No need for some silly diesel that will save me a few pounds at the filling station and then cost me thousands later on. No need for some silly small turbo petrol engine which at the end of the day is just a small engine trying to be a 1.6. So with the Qashqai there was the tried and tested 1.6 petrol which is perfect for my traffic filled commute to work every day.

Kia Sportage (and the Hyundai equivalent) is OK but it isn't that comfortable or quite inside. It might be cheaper but there is a reason for that. Kuga was quite nice. Personally for me it would be a choice between a Qashqai or Tiguan. I didn't go for the Tiguan because it didn't do an engine to suit.

Well the Qasqai is very popular and it's not known for having any reliability issues, ok it may not be German build quality but it certainly no worse than it's rivals.

Renault Lagunas and Meganes are popular, with many well documented reliability issues (often affecting the DCi diesel engines also fitted to the Nissan range).

As I said, I know a number of people who work in the Nissan plant, including some senior shop-floor people and people concerned with quality control; and they tell enough warning stories to put me off. Nissan quality ain't what it used to be, I assure you. The number of recalls affecting British built Nissans over the last few years is alone enough to re-inforce my view.

Hence; faced with the choice between the 'not-quite German build quality' with 'pretty-much German materials' of Nissan, or the 'German build quality' with 'Nissan materials' of Skoda, I'll take the Skoda every time.

(just for fun, of the ~20 people I know who work for Nissan, 6 work in QC or senior-line positions - guess how many of those drive a Nissan? It isn't 6.)
