My baby seedlings

Sounds like the seeds are cheaper at Netto, don't know if we have one in Reading. I covered my runners with glass and my sweetcorn with fleece but the frost and cold has still killed them  . I have some reserves on the windowsill though0

hi sorry to hear about the frosts killing your seedlings, don't give up though i have done this loads of times because i'm too damn inpatient i can feel it coming on again keep looking at my veg plot and have to have a real word with myself to not do the planting yet, my gren house is overflowing.....oh i have the urge again now0 -
I've said this before (on the tomatoes thread I think) but my Grandads tip for planting out was 'wait until FA cup final Saturday' because this is the middle to the end of May sometime the frosts should be over and if your OH's (and/ or DS's) watch the footy it gives you 2 hours of blissful peace and quiet to enjoy planting everything out.
Never thought I'd hear myself saying this but 'roll on FA cup Saturday'When life hands you a lemon, make sure you ask for tequilla and salt0 -
I'm leaving planting mine out until bank holiday weekend at the end of the month. One of two things will be happening then, we'll either be going away to stay at the inlaws again (and a friend of OH who's just had a their first child, a little baby boy :j) when we may possibly be "getting rid" of DD for the half-term hols or at least for a few days (decorating here I come if that is the case!!!). OR we will be going up to visit for the day which will give me the Saturday morning to plant things out, the afternoon to see my family and then the night to get things ready (picnic for the car as I can get VERY travel sick in warm weather even when I've taken travelsick pills unless I eat a little often
) Then we are free to spend Sunday there and then Monday free to do whatever we want :j:j Whichever, I know I'm going to be very busy. I just wish we had a bigger garden. With the number of seedlings I've got I'll be able to completely cover all the beds with plants so there will be no weeding and STILL have pots of plants

Hooray, looks like I can ask my runner bean questions on here
Daughter came home from school a few weeks ago with a runner bean seedling, about 2 inches high. It was growing like billyo so I started a thread asking what to do and someone told me to get a big pot and some canes....which I did.
I planted the seedling in the big pot and made a wigwam of 3 canes for it to grow up....all was fine until I stood the pot outside for the day last week. It was a bit windy and a couple of the leaves have broken off  . Anyway I brought the pot back in and he (the runner bean...it's a he) is now in the living room, in front of the window. He's about 4 ft high now but is very thinis that right?
I can't imagine anything so spindly ever producing anything.Just run, run and keep on running!0 -
Aren't you supposed to pinch out runner beans? I don't like them myself so I don't grow them. I'll try and have a google for you.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

Aha!! Found this.
Where space is really short, this type of structure can be used for container growing runner beans. In this case, insert one cane centrally in the container, tie six or so lengths of garden twine to the top of the cane and secure the other ends of the twine to the edge of the container. Plant three or four seeds, which will then grow up the twine. The plants will need their tips pinching out when they reach the top of the twine.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

That sounds great but as my runner is already 4ft high and already trained around the three canes I don't know whether to fiddle about with him or just leave him. And should he be so spindly?
BTW, I don't like runner beans either but I'm under pressure by 5 year old not to kill him :rolleyes:Just run, run and keep on running!0 -
If you're keeping it in the pot then you don't really want it getting to more than 4 foot? I'd pinch it out now and then it will start to bush up a bit.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things
