Hopeful the MSE website team will be updating their code to work with IE11.

Why should MSE change anything if the default settings in IE 11 can be changed by the user?

If you're referring to the suggestion in post #10, removing protected mode in security is certainly not the way I'd want to go.

The IE11 roll-out is like all those that preceded it, it takes a while for webmasters to tweak their code to keep up ... some are ahead of the game some lag behind.

There's no way I want to compromise my security settings whilst waiting for the laggers to wake up and smell the coffee thank you very much. :D

Running IE11 with EPM disabled is still a more secure browser than IE10 on any Windows OS other than Win 8. EPM was also available on IE10 but was not enabled by default unless running the Metro App version on Win 8, so how many users do you think actually have it turned on?

For some reason, MS have decided to enable it by default on the desktop browser in IE11. It not only causes issues with some website code though, MS also admit that it disables most browser add-ons, helper objects and tool-bars. It effectively runs the browser in an sandbox to prevent interaction with the local computer. MS say that IE should offer the user an option to disable it on a per-website basis if the user attempts an action which EPM prevents.

My experience with online banking was that every time I tried to view or download my statement IE offered to turn off EPM (presumably because it needed to send the website information to a process on my computer so that it could be opened with a PDF viewer or written to disc, and EPM prevents that happening) but what actually happened when it did was that the bank completely disconnected my session requiring me to log in again and repeating the same scenario in an endless loop.

I decided I could live without it, particularly as I have several other security measures in place on my system, and I'm no more exposed as a result than if I was running IE10 in default configuration.

A side result of that was that I suddenly found all the things that used to work in IE10, which I couldn't understand why they were no longer working in IE11, started working again.

There surely has to be a balance between security and useability. It maybe that other security measures I have in place interact badly with EPM, so YMMV. I'm not the only person to have found that disabling it brings back the expected functionality of IE though.

From my point of view, I've found EPM akin to locking myself indoors. I might greatly reduce the risk of having a tree fall on me, or getting knocked over by a bus, but it would make life difficult, not to mention miserable!

Edit: In fact, I've just discovered that MS have now disabled EPM in IE11 by default with security update KB2907803 released last Tuesday. They say that it was only enabled in the initial release to allow them to gather information on the extent of incompatibility which currently exists, so that they can work with site owners and software developers to identify the action that needs to be taken to develop compatible plug-in free sites or new plugins.

I take that to mean we've all been used as guinea pigs, but feel free to add your own interpretation.

Try using a better browser, IE is still playing catch up and there are several other options to choose from.

    That's not the point.

What is it with "if it doesn't work try a different browser" anyway?

Can no one solve this problem?

Is it IE11 or the way MSE have their forums working?

No. It's an MSE problem ... outdated software that didn't keep up with Microsoft's latest IE version.

    Thank you Oblivion and molerat.

I can use smileys by right-clicking and choosing copy. :D
But although the issue isn't of major importance, it seems to me that when software is 'upgraded', it never seems to work as well as it did before!

    Thanks for replying.
