No. There will always be an abundance of people who prefer to do nothing to reduce consumption. In the future, as now, they'll continue to cross subsidise the frugal.
I cherish these people.0 -
I'm amazed that so many are falling for the utility company's propaganda that all of the increased energy costs are caused by 'green taxes'.
Yep. Typical short termism. Of course what will happen is that this government or a future government will eventually bow to the will of the masses, reduce green taxes and investment meaning we're even more screwed in future...and so it goes on.0 -
As energy bills increase, the more people will focus on the energy efficiency of homes they are willing to buy (or indeed rent). The more energy efficient homes will command a premium price and so any investment a home owner makes will be repaid not just in energy savings while they own the home, but also in the increased sale price when they move on.
As to your comment about replacing electrical goods, this would happen whether the product was z rated or a rated. However, we had incandescent bulbs that used 60w to 100w, we replaced them with fluorescent bulbs that were 12w to 25w and now we have LED bulbs that are 2w to 10w. It's no bad thing to replace electrical products at the end of their lives and enjoy the greater efficiencies of new products.
It does indeed make sense to upgrade, if it can be afforded, when items fail. Whether CFLs/LEDs last as long as promised is another issue. Interestingly whilst we may have swapped to more energy efficient items we often seem to have several times more of them.
Some improvements are aesthetic as well as functional and personal choice. Whilst energy efficiency will undoubtedly play a part in a properties overall desirability there are many more that will take preference.
On the basis you already have windows and doors insitu have you worked out when the windows will have paid for themselves from a pure energy saving point of view?"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

Fracking !!
It's the only mid-term solution I can think of, which has the potential to deliver stability in costs.
Renewables will require a lot more investment in the transport network, and that means expense.
Fracking is an option, but it isn't a substitute for investment in renewables. If we don't invest massively in renewables, we're just building up ever increasing problems for future generations.0 -
For the glass half full types. If energy is going to increase by more than inflation then something else must increase slower.
For the glass half empty types. It probably won't be 'essentials'.0 -

Green taxes are just that tax.
Why can't they be collected as such and be based on ability to pay?
In addition when fuel and energy increases the government already benefit through increased VAT."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

Even a committed cynic would find it hard to argue that everything will increase faster than inflation.
I'm hoping for some bargains in the male grooming area.0 -

Fracking costs are not yet known, may be high.
AIUI all supply will go into the European wholesale market and we will pay a wholesale price determined by that market, which will no doubt be affected by global markets.
The government will want it's share through taxation and other producers will throttle supply.
Whilst it may take some of the volatility out of the supply side I doubt very much it will halt the increase in prices."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

Is anyone else thinking that Grizzly works for a utility company and wants to do everything he can to undermine the move towards energy efficiency?
If he isn't then I really can't understand his outpouring of negativity towards energy efficiency on this thread?0
