The OP is in Sydney, and no doubt in multiple parts of Sydney. It is safe to assume, without checking a coverage map, that Vodafone Australia does have coverage in Sydney, even though it is reputed to have the worst coverage of any Australian network.

An update on the coverage issue. As i am now back in the UK my phone works perfectly, so the issue is definitely with Vodafone/three in Oz as my Three technician guy told me. So other Three customers please be aware what will happen when you try to use your phone in Oz. Thank goodness for wifi and Viber, which i used to keep in touch with home.
