Hi read on the bbc news website that virgin media are to increase prices in February 2014 does that mean we will be able to cancel without charge if so do we have to wait for the e-mail or letter from virgin first?

  • Hi Rob.

Why would you be able to cancel without charge?

Firstly, this is usually only mobile phones you can do this with and as long as it's not more than x%, then they are entitled to do it, but it's irrelevant as this is not about mobile phones.

BT and Sky are also putting up their charges.

You can't cancel without paying an early termination of contract fee (unless you are already out-of-contract) unless the amount of the increase exceeds 10% (as per the T&Cs of the contract) which it clearly does not.

    According to MSE - yes

    Can I leave penalty-free?

Virgin Media says you have 30 days from receiving a letter or email informing you of the price rises to tell it you want to leave your contract – in which case, you'll be able to do so penalty-free.

I was under the impression that, as long as the rise was below 10%, there was no way to leave early without an ETC. Perhaps this needs clarifying?
  • sounds like Ofcom have moved the goalposts.

In this scenario, I find it a bit harsh - it's basically saying that Virgin/Sky/BT can't ever change the prices?

    Another MSE quote

Ofcom has confirmed any increase – apart from VAT or other tax rises

As above, you can cancel. When the BB price went up two years ago I just called and said cancel please with no termination fee. I was told I was not allowed. I said OFCOM says otherwise and they promptly cancelled.

Virgin Media have always allowed penalty free early termination of contract for any price rise. It is in their terms and conditions. Ofcom's ruling will bring everyone else into line starting from next year.

Why not just stick with the facts, and not just what your impression is?

I think the "facts" have already been established some days back.
It was Sky who were able to avoid having customers leave early without ETC by virtue of having it written into their contract that price rises below 10% were allowed. OFCOM's ruling will obviously change this from now on..
