3GB of iPhone data used within 5 days?!

Options
Hi,

I'm new to this forum :j and I am having a big problem! About three months ago I signed up for an iPhone 5, with 3GB data (unlimited calls and texts too). I pay about £49 a month for this contract, which I was fine with. But my problem is my data.

The apps I use on my phone are; Facebook Messenger, What'sapp, Instagram, Amazon Cloud Player and Candy Crush. I also check my emails sometimes. My sister has the same amount of apps, plus more, but her data remains okay.

I have noticed also if I go onto tumblr (through a browser) the next morning I have 'spent' about £15 in data, although I haven't reposted anything just viewed images/text.

Last night I checked my balance which was this:
i.imgur.com/6qbfVEI.png - please paste. (as you can see there is still 8 days to go until I get new data)
and then this morning:
i.imgur.com/ELGa1xD.png - please paste.

So now it is over £33. I was going to phone them but I am not even sure where I stand. I have been charged over my amount since my contract began, last month it was £40 over by the final day and now 8 days prior it is £30 over.

Does anyone know what I should say when I call/do? I don't think I am in the wrong but I would at least like to have a foot to stand on when I do call!

Thanks!

Can you see on you phone how much data each application is using like you can on Android?

I used to have a mobile dongle that I used when working away in my motorhome. I used it about 3 hights a week all I wanted and never busted my 3Gb allowance.

Your usage soes sound extremely high

    Thank you for your reply!

I've tried to see what it could be but I am struggling to even see what it could be as I am comparing it with others. I downloaded an app called 'VPN' which apparently tracks what is using the majority of the data and so far it says:
    "Web 115.37 MB:"
    "Video & Audio: 47.79:"
    "Web (secure): 19.03MB:"
According to it's tracking it has 'saved' me 5.67MB. I downloaded this just last night so I am not 100% how it works as yet.

A few online places have said how it is not unheard of for contracts to be set up wrongly, which I am hoping, but I am stressing none the less on what to do.

Yes, in iOS7, it's under Settings, Mobile. Here you can even disable mobile data for apps that waste data.

It's not just how much you use when using your apps, it's also when you download updates to the operating system or to any of the apps.
So, have you recently updated to iOS7, or done updates from the app store?
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

None. Apart from a couple of app updates in the store (for instagram etc) I haven't been able to access wifi so I haven't updated my software since I first got my phone. It won't allow me to update until I reach wifi.

If you downloaded the app last night and have used about 180mb since then, say you use 200mb a day, that would be 6000 mb a month, or 6gb, which is double your allowance.

Downloading apps, having location settings switched on, background app refresh, all use your data when you might not even be using your phone. Plus many more things.

You are using a lot of data, but it is possible and it might just be your usage rather than a fault with the phone or the contract.

I use my iphone a lot during the day for the same kind of apps, what's app, facebook, instagram, Twitter and email. I never go over 1gb of data but I do use wifi when at home at night. Your usage does sound high for what you use it for.

Would you happen to know what is safe to switch off that might use data? I am always worried I switch something off, settings-wise, and unknowingly stop email or messages coming through, yet save data.

I am looking into switching my broadband into wifi so I too can use it at home, hoping this might help!

First one would be background app refresh, this constantly updates apps even when you are not using them
    > settings, general, background app refresh (turn off)

Next push email, constantly waiting to download emails as they arrive, when you turn it off, you just need to remember to check your emails manually ever now and again, or change it ot download them every hour or what ever you need
    > settings, mail, fetch new data, push (turn off), if you scroll down to bottom you can set to fetch every 15, 30mins, hourly or manually

Itunes automatic app updates, automatically downloads and updates apps, turn off and you can still do it manually when you are somewhere with wifi.
    > settings, itunes & app store, automatic downloads (turn off)

Location services, select which apps you want to use it for, which ones you don't
    > settings, privacy, location services.

Changing these settings should save you some data and also save your battery too.
