Tuning my Panasonic DVD Recorder to the TV without Cable

We have cancelled our Virgin Media TV package at the same time we moved house and we now want to use our Panasonic DVD Recorder/Player Model DMR-ES30V to record programmes from Freeview but we don't seem to be able to tune in the stations as we did before on our DVD Recorder. My husband has checked the aerial connections with the book and everything seems to be ok. The aerial signal he said is coming into the Recorder from outside and going back out to the TV. Have we got it the right way around ?

Is there an incompatibility problem with the recorder maybe set to analogue instead of digital whilst our TV obviously is digital though we had no problem before. I have tried manual tuning and auto tuning and it doesn't seem to find anything.

Can someone give me an idiot's guide to checking that the connections are right and what the DVD remote needs to be set to to receive the tuning and channel set-up.

I should add that the TV is working perfectly after connecting the aerials the way I said.

I dont think this device has a digital tv tuner, if so you are out of luck. A messy option to enable recording would be to feed it cheapo DTV box.

From an online instruction manual :-
The Panasonic DMR-ES30V is not equipped with an internal digital tuner. It has to be hooked up to a cable, satellite or digital converter box in order to record broadcast programming.

That's great but can I buy a digital converter box as I don't have Sky, satellite or cable now? My Broadband is with BT. I am not very technical and am not aware of all the recent technology for TV's and Recorders etc. Are these available to buy at somewhere like Curry's ? ;)

Not many makes of set top boxes are available now as most people now have recorders or TV's with inbuilt digital tuners, Curry's only appear to do one cheap one.

Our TV has an inbuilt Freeview Receiver as we get all Freeview Channels, does this make any difference ?

You'll have to record direct from the TV, which means you'll only be able to record whatever channel the TV is showing.

I can't record anything at the moment because I can't tune my Recorder into the TV channels which is why I raised this thread in the first place asking what needed to be done.

I have now contacted Panasonic to find out what they say about the recorder and if I can do anything to tune in the digital TV channels from my TV with Freeview channels and whether I need a digital tuner converter box.

You've already been told that there is no digital tuner in your recorder and that your only option is to daisy-chain it to a Freeview decoder box.

"daisy chain" ????? I have been told to buy a Freeview Receiver, why would I need one of those when I can already receive Freeview Channels on my TV as it has an in-built Freeview Receiver ?

Are you reading ANY of the responses?
If you want to record using your pre-digital DVD recorder as a PVR then you'll need to connect it via a digital decoder.

Anyway, as you've contacted Panasonic direct, no more need for further comment here...
