As someone who works in the NHS and has recruited a fair few people over the years, I did think it would probably not be possible for them to just offer you the job.

What they should be able to do though is only advertise for a very short length of time, which helps to speed up the process - fewer applicants, less time shortlisting, fewer interviews. We've had posts advertised for just 48 hours, and 24 might be possible. You'd need to prep your application as much as possible in advance so you're ready to apply as soon as the job advert "goes live" (I assume it would be on the NHS Jobs website?).

Yup. Job A's Boss had mentioned a number of different tactics including a short advertising window, certain criteria listed as essential and coaching sessions so as to ensure the application is filled with the key buzz words that help to get a candidate shortlisted.

Another thing we've been able to do occasionally is only open the job to only internal candidates - not sure in what circumstances this is possible though.

A lot of hospital trusts have the facility to post jobs on the NHS Jobs website that can only be viewed by people within the trust - like internal advertising.

What you can do there, is go to the 'Staff Vacancies' section of the Intranet, accessing the job on your tea or lunch break, and, after logging in, save the job to your Jobs Basket so that when you go home, you can access the job from outside the hospitals servers and waste no more time at work than necessary.

I'm just annoyed and fed up that I will probably be working two jobs for the forseeable future. The NHS recruitment process is so slow it's unbelieveable.
 Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway...

    Ow, drat & botheration.
In so far as your current working patterns allow, go & have several pints with folk who'll see you safe home. If you can't drown your sorrows, at least shove them as far under the surface as you can in the time.
Then, rested fed & sober, have an intelligent chat with Job A's boss as to what she recommends & how much space she has for manoeuvre.
    All the very best!
  • My vote is option 2.

Thanks. Boss Lady at Job A has already told me her options i.e. none. What HR says, goes.

Although I'm wondering what part Psycho Boss' mum has played in this....
    My vote is option 2.

I'm trying, I'm trying! I'm doing my best here!

My body clock is completely out of kilter - I've got a week of evenings and three night shifts coming up. I'll get a night's sleep on Thursday, I reckon.....

I worked a night shift Christmas Eve to Christmas Day (eight hours Bank Holiday pay ) and met the Boss Lady on Christmas morning.

There's been a !!!! up between different sections in HR and the job won't be posted until after the New Year at the earliest.

There could be months of this juggling two jobs 'thing' before this is all settled.

Today is my one day off paid employment and I'm catching up with housework, popping to Boots (BARGAINS!! :j) and doing some sewing.

    I'm knackered. :(

The job's been internally advertised with a week's window for applications.

    Done it.

The last time they advertised for a position in this department, there were hundreds of applications. HR took it down to random selection!!

So there's no guarantee that mine will be looked at at all. :(

I've got my PDR with Job B later on today. I've got a few things to discuss......

I've finally been interviewed and, the following day, offered the night job.

They're hoping to get me installed permanently in April (new financial and annual leave year), until then I've got hours to keep me going until the end of March.

I've also managed to negotiate down the hours at the evening job.

So far, the two are doable together and I could use the extra money to bring down the overdraft(s :o).

Should the evening job jeopardise the night job, the evening job goes.

Until then, I'm in the money. :D

So pleased you've got something permanent after all the grief you've had over the last year (or more?). Congratulations.
