I don't know whether this will work, but I assume an XP pro computer is an ex-business computer.

When I bring an XP pro laptop home from work, I have to change the LAN settings before it will connect to my network.

From memory, it goes something like control panel/internet or network options and then LAN settings (a button towards the bottom of the pop up box). I choose that and un-tick the proxy box, press OK, and the computer will then connect.

    Worth a try? Good luck.

I assume it will be ex business with it having windows prof, I bought if from a pc seller on ebay. I am going to turn it off look for the LAN settings.

Just had a look and the proxy box wasn't ticked.

Going to turn off laptop and see what happens.

    Ta.

start > run > type in cmd and click ok. When the black box comes up type in ipconfig and press enter. It should give you an IP address, something like 192.168.1.7

    are you getting one?

    Yes, 192.168.0.6

Should the default gateway be exactly the same? It ends in 0.1

I am trying different sites on the laptop, some I can get on if I go back into the history menu and go via the original page to view new pages on the site, some pages won't load.

I am on the netbook also and a pop up box just came on from Mcafee, It said Unknown PC or Device Detected and it shows the IP address above which ends in 6.
  • yep the default gateway is right. that's the router, every device on the network should have a different IP address.

if your netbook is popping up messages..... what happens if you switch your netbook off? can you use the net on the other machine?

Can get online on some sites, have changed the homepage from msn (which i kept getting the error message with) to mse forums page and I can get online with that using either cable or dongle.

Some sites won't let me do much, i get the error.

I wonder if it is to do with the browser ie 6?

Also, on the mse forums homepage, I can see the titles of each thread but the graphics at the top of the page are all over the place boxes with writing hanging out of them etc.

Am I best downloading ie 7 or ie 8? This is quite a slow pc which I assume is to do with the browser as it is a higher spec than the acer aspire one that I am typing this on.

I would rather have firefox but it wouldn't let me download it.

    Try getting Google Chrome. https://www.google.com/chrome

Reason sites don't like is because of IE6. If you can find another PC with net access, you can also download IE8 to it. I would recommend IE8 as there's going to be less and less support for IE7 even if it'll work. IE8 is the highest you can go with XP

I tried downloading chrome but it said I couldn't download it with my browser.

The laptop has been reset back to factory settings by seller so it only has xp pro serv pack 1.

I have just found an original copy of xp service pack 2 which says it is compatible with xp home editon, professional, pc tablet etc.

Is it just a case of starting the laptop, inserting the disc and letting it do its thing?

Will I need the key from the bottom of the laptop when I install the service pack 2?
