I got a secondhand pc today, went online using a dongle (it hasn't got wifi) and set my home page which was fine, looked at couple of other pages which loaded although slow.
Then hard wired and it worked ok.
Tried to go to youtube etc but is said I had an out of date browser IE 6 so I went to microsoft and tried to download IE 8 but it failed to download.
I have since gone back online or tried to and after loading the original home page it brings the Microsoft Int Exp box up with the red cross and says:
Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site http://uk.msn.com/?ocid=iefvrt. Operation aborted
I then click on the box with ok in it and it takes me to the white page which says The page cannot be displayed etc etc.
Can anyone tell me what I can do to get online please?
Ta.

have you tried clicking on "troubleshoot my connection" - if you right-click on the internet icon in the bottom-right of your screen - and see what that says
(if not obvious pls note this is not part of internet explorer.)
what is your operating system (xp I assume as IE8 is latest for that)Friendly greeting!0 -
Hi. I assume that you can't access any sites at all?
If you are using XP then you could try system restore. (all programs, accesories, system tools, sytem restore) This might take it back to an earlier date before you tried to install IE8.
If this works then you could try to download IE8 from cnet or filehippo, but make sure the address has 'us' in it instead of 'gb' as I think thats caused the problem.
You could also try Firefox or Google chrome.
Good luck, Val.0 -
are you sure your dongle is still connected?0

Sorry for the late reply, had to go and cook tea!
I did a system restore but it took me back to todays date, it showed that I had installed a zoom wireless usb.
For some reason I have no longer got an internet sign in the bottom corner!
I took the dongle out and it is now hardwired so am I doing something really stupid? It connected automatically earlier when I used the ethernet cable.0 -

I have it hard wired, I will take that out and try the dongle.
Another thing, a box came up on the netbook (I am on that at the minute) saying another computer is trying to access your........... can't remember what is said, perhaps network.0 -

I no longer have an internet icon at the bottom of the screen.
I have the pc connected to the modem via the ethernet cable.
The system is Xp pro.0 -
So it worked on the dongle, and won't now it's wired? Is that right?
Does the dongle connect to your wireless router, or a phone network?import this0 -

Ok, it worked on the dongle at first, then I thought I would see if it would work using the cable as my husband didn't think it would be able to as it is quite basic.
Anyway, I connected the cable and it went online fine. I went to a couple of sites and they said basically browser was out of date (ie 6). I also went to the firefox site and it said my system does not support firefox.
The dongle connects to the wireless router.
I turned the router off for a fews secs and tried again to get online using the dongle and I could.
So, I unplugged it and connected the cable again to go and change to ie 8 as I thought it would be faster that way, low and behold the bl**dy thing is doing the same thing again, ie not letting me get online.
I tried using the dongle again, same thing there.
After I had switched the router back on the first site it connected to was sky repair, it then said congratulations you can now go back online with sky.
But I can't now.0 -
Try another browser such as Firefox.
Assuming you are using a wifi dongle, whilst wired download inSSIDer. You can now see all the local wifi.
Plug the dongle in and then start the laptop. Is it "found" in Device Manager?
Is your wifi showing in Network & Sharing? If not, try setting it up again.0 -

I can't do anything with the dongle or ethernet cable it I can't get online.
I tried to go and download firefox before and it said my system wasn't suitable.0
