Separate Renting sub-board

Evening all!
Someone's suggested we separate Renting out into its own sub-board.
We can't make any promises, especially as we have a Forum Redesign underway, but can you let us know your view on it so we can take it into account?
Thanks!
Andrea

Do you think making Renting a separate sub-board would make the info easier to find? 117 votes

NoI prefer them together. Lots of people ask questions about buy-to-let investment, or about whether they should buy or rent - and those kinds of questions are easier with one board.
If there's going to be a split, I'd prefer it to happen geographically (eg England and Wales one board, Scotland another, etc).0 -
NoI prefer them together as very often the topics and knowledge required merge. Also it keeps the forum varied enough to be interesting without being completely irrelevant to the majority.
I do agree a Scotland sub forum would be useful as it would prevent people being given incorrect information on a regular basis.Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!0 -
NoKeep them together.
Too much cross over.0 -

A great idea. Us landlords really don't want to mix in a tenant forum, we move in different circles. I feel dirty when coming into contact with tenants, who are a sub-species.
PS The above was tongue in cheek, please don't take life too seriously.0 -
NoPeople in rented who are first time buyers have questions about how to give notice on their rental to align with their purchase Completion.
Lots of overlap.
Keep them together.
If you want a sub-board, separate out Scotland where the law and processes are so different (or may be wait till after the independence referendum next year!).0 -

YesRenting and would definitely appreciate a separate renting board.0

YesYes, absolutely.
A separate board for renting would be much better.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

Well the poll question is different from the question 'whether we should have a separate board for renting'. So it would be a bit silly to use the results from one to support the other.
Technically it might be easier for people to find information about renting in a board just about renting, but it doesn't mean people think we should have a separate board, as often people don't realise there's crossover in their situation. For example, when people are buying for the first time and asking questions about competition, they often don't know that they need advice about not giving notice on their rental until exchange. Other buyers don't realise the issues if a property they like has tenants, and only other posters knowledgeable about renting could tell them the potential pitfalls of this.Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!0 -
NoPrevious threads on this:

Werdnal:
"Many of the topics surrounding renting, letting and buying/selling overlap; where for instance would you put:
"My landlord is putting our rental property on the market", "Buying the property I am currently renting", "Giving notice on my tenancy to co-incide with completion on property I am buying", "my property won't sell, should I let it out/" or "selling up and renting"? All frequent topics here!
Mods would have a full time job segregating mis-posted threads and it would mean those who contribute to both buying/selling and renting queries have 2 forums to trawl through. Valuable advice could be lost as posters may put their questions in one when the other would be more appropriate, so they do not reach the most qualified audience for responses. Posts may be duplicated as they fall into either category, with the inevitable confusion that can cause with replies contradicting each other!"
franklee:
""not forgetting the should I buy now or rent topics as well. Even if the OP is just buying he may end up offering on a house that's tenanted. Were would he put I'm buying a house that's tenanted but I want vacant possession?"

poppysarah:
"Would we not need one for
"property buying and then renting out the old one"?"
Cissi:
"In my opinion there is too much overlap between the two topics for a separation to work: accidental LLs who have failed to sell, sellers who are moving into rented accomodation, renters looking to buy, renters asked to allow viewings so the LL can sell the house..."
franklee: "Yes and one for renting but now want to buy and then there's the asking should I sell and buy again or sell and rent? Or the my landlord is selling can I buy it, what about the landlord getting repossessed, that's sort of selling. Oh what about tenants renting a flat asking questions about the landlord's long lease"
Covered already by many comments above but I agree if it's split new threads would be posted on both plus the mods will have to keep moving a lot of posts about. If the renting experts don't read the buying board I agree OPs will miss out on vital points such as what to be wary of when buying a tenanted property.
Encouraging people to give descriptive titles when starting a new thread would make it easier for people to choose which threads to read and which to ignore.0
