Just had this conversation with my vet. He said that sometimes a dog may be a bit more laid back, but this is probably more due to some dogs putting on a bit of weight over time and getting a bit idle, rather than directly due to being castrated.
He went through some health benefits (most of which I've forgotten, tbh.) The main behavioural reasons seem to be if the dog is spraying or wandering. The vet said it doesn't seem to make much difference to anything else, behaviour wise. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
It will greatly reduce the risk of some genito urinary tract cancers too.
All in all, it's the responsible thing to do.Norn Iron Club member 4730 -
I very reluctantly got my 5 year old dog castrated a couple of months ago. His main problem was aggression towards other male dogs. If another male dog tried to get on his back, all hell broke loose.
My dog wouldn't just see it off, he wanted to kill it and my nerves were shattered with him.
many people said castration wouldn't work - but it has. He's changed beyond belief. He is no longer targeted by other aggressive dogs and even if one does try to start a fight, my dog just walks away.
A miracle indeed!
He'd also been a bit territorial with my son's male dog. Not aggressive, but marking. That's all stopped too, and he just wants to play now. And so far, he hasn't put an ounce on.
So I'd say to the OP, get your dog done. I'm sure he will be all the better for it.0 -

I'm so, so glad it worked out:T I remember you being in a bit of a state about it, were you doing the right thing etc. I have often wondered how things went. You must be pleased with the results. And relieved as well. Good for you.
I personally am a believer in "if you're not breeding from them, get them done". But with hindsight I think that timing is important. I think I had number 2 dog done too early (10 months) and he never seemed to grow up. If I ever had another male I'd wait until after 12 months at least, maybe even 18 months. Now I've got a female and am waiting for her to have her first season and then she will be done.
Op, I've never heard of castration having a negative effect on a dog, but that's just me. Other people might know different. I do know entire male dogs that are a total nightmare when there's a female in season in the vicinity. But on the other hand I've known entire males that aren't bothered by it at all. Much depends on the disposition of the individual dog I think.
My advice? Have it done.

Just had our 21 month old springer spaniel castrated. We always said we would have him castrated as we never planned on breeding from him, but as one of his plums never descended it was essential that we had him done as it has an increased risk of cancer.
As for changing their personallity, its done nothing for ours, he is still as hyper as always!!0 -
thanks for the advice.will get him booked in next week, managed to get a deal through groupon which means it will only cost £59!0

Excellent deal!

Just wanted to add that I'd certainly recommend it if there's been problems
I had to get Ben done when I got him - I was very reluctant because of his age (7+) as he had no "issues" and I was worried it might alter him being done so late BUT he went to my friends during the day & they had an entire female so no choice
Honestly - no changes in his personality at all

That's a good price. I paid £80 as the vet was doing a special offer at the time.0
