As noted earlier in this thread, prior to creating Privacy Support Ltd, its managing director had been managing director of Got U Covered Ltd. that sold insurance for Sky Satellite systems.

The complaints about Got U Covered were featured in the Mirror, Guardian and Observer newspapers and centered around mis-selling of insurance to existing Sky subscribers. TPS lists were ignored and, in many cases, Sky subscribers found out they then had two satellite insurance policies - one with the Sky-approved company and one with Got U Covered.

A reporter for the Observer discovered that Got U Covered purchased data lists, that were almost certainly not filtered against TPS, from a company called Data Partnership Solutions (DPS). The managing director of DPS was also managing director Satellite Direct UK Ltd and Satcover Ltd.

Sky won a High Court case against Satellite Direct UK Ltd and its sister company Satcover Ltd for passing off its products as 'Sky approved'. The ICO also received complaints about DPS.

Since the High Court case in 2006, the MD of Satellite Direct UK and Satcover has been barred twice as company director which run concurrently for a total of seven years.

I think there can be little doubt that the data list being used now by Privacy Support Ltd is derived from that list they bought from DPS as, when I called Privacy Support I was told they bought their data from a company called 'Data Partnership". It may well be supplemented by further data obtained by telephone surveys under the guise of 'market research' as I indicated earlier in this thread.

In his former company, Got U Covered, the MD of Privacy Support sponsored telephone surveys that were almost certainly illegal as TPS lists were apparently ignored and the data gathered was then being used to offer a service to customers (i.e. Sky satellite insurance)

The data list now in the possession of Privacy Support Ltd must be quite substantial. One of the claimed services Privacy Support offers when you pay them £79 is for the removal of your data from data lists by purchasing those data lists. I would suggest that the only list they could possibly remove your data from is the list they have already purchased and you can require them not to use that data for marketing purposes or distributing it to anyone else without paying them a single penny!

The chances that such a disreputable company would comply with any such request is probably zero. Even if you did pay them £79, I still doubt they would remove your data from any list and requesting £79 for your data to be removed from a list they already own is probably illegal anyway!

I see his posts (and mine mentioning I had marked them as :spam:) have disappeared. :D
  • And mine asking him to email the forum team for permission to post as a company rep and what might happen if he didn't :D

At least the main accusations remain. Will have to wait and see if any company representative responds.

I made a complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) As a result, Privacy Support Ltd.have removed any mention that they buy-back customer data.

Privacy Support also amended their website to state which call and mail registers they register you with. They now claim to register your details with TPS and MRS for free!

Given that their call blocker can be purchased elsewhere for less than half the price Privacy Support Ltd charge, I suggest potential customers look elsewhere and avoid this rogue company like the plague.
  • Phoned my elderly mother in December 2013. Claimed to be calling on behalf of BT offering a call-blocking device for £19.99. As she'd been receiving a lot of cold calls, she thought this might be useful. Sum taken from credit card was actually £79.99 by Privacy Support Ltd. Returned gadget same day received and was told refund would be processed upon receipt. Was still chasing refund weeks later and found that the company had apparently gone out of business. Still registered on Companies House under Company No. 07110046. Now trying to get the transaction refunded by the card company but they are saying she needs a refund voucher.

There have been some complaints about this company and some very strange responses to those complaints here...

The managing director of Privacy Support Ltd acted like a child on this forum too.

Unfortunately Privacy Support Ltd is no longer in business. your device has a manufacturers warranty of 12 months as per the instructions and packaging. the manufacturer is shenzhen Cheetah Technology Ltd.

Your telephone number may have been registered with the Telephone Prefence Service (TPS) to limit the amount of cold calls you receive.

If you have not paid in full for the device the debt will be written off as we have decided not to collect any oustanding money due.

We are sorry for any inconvienience caused.

I believe insolvent companies have a duty to collect outstanding debts in order to satisfy claims made against the company by their creditors. This childish director is just 'shutting up shop' and choosing to ignore both debtors and creditors. I don't suppose he will go through any wind-up procedure either, as that costs money. He will just simply allow the company to be struck of the register as he won't want to pay to submit accounts and returns to Companies House either.

Why does the above quote from Privacy Support's website state: "Your telephone number may have been registered with the Telephone Prefence Service (TPS) to limit the amount of cold calls you receive."

If the call blocking device was sold on the basis that your number would be registered with TPS then they surely did that, right? Or did they just forget?

And what new entrepreneurial activity will Privacy Support's managing director, Danny Keet, get involved in next? Meanwhile, he may like to attend spelling classes.
