My aunt, who is registered with TPS, received a cold call from these scammers a few days ago. They sold her a Telephone call-blocking device for £79. She paid by debit card.

They claimed they were associated with BT Connect and gave a company number of: 07110046 and their phone number: 01243 788279.

There have been some complaints about this company and some very strange responses to those complaints here...

The managing director of the company is Danny Keet and his former company GOT U COVERED targeted elderly people registered with TPS before...

On its website, https://www.privacysupport.co.uk, the company claims to be registered under the Data Protection Act. It is not!

When I challenged them as to why they are calling TPS-registered numbers, they said that the TPS list is of no use because it does not apply to overseas call centres! The logic of that statement was lost on me as they acknowledged they call from UK-based call centres!

Report to Action Fraud and OFT.

It may be worth pestering the bank if the product doesn't work/doesn't arrive, of which one of the above seems likely from the reviews.

Since she bought over the phone, DSR will apply - so she has until 7 days from receipt of the device (if it turns up) to notify them that she doesn't want it.

That is a very valid point, and one I'd forgotten about when writing original post. Thanks imoneyop.

Can't she cancel BEFORE it arrives too? (DSRs let you cancel at any time from placement of order up to 7 working days after delivery - assuming cancellation rights were advised; if not then it is up to 3 months and 7 working days).

Retailer must refund all monies paid (including delivery charge) within 30 days of cancellation. (Cancel by email if possible, otherwise by letter - need an audit trail/durable means. Phone cancellation may be OK, but provides no proof). Consumer may have to pay for return of goods, hence why she should cancel NOW, before it arrives so she doesn't get lumbered with this cost.

Yes - my post probably wasn't as clear as it should have been.

The only problem that I can see though is that she might not be able to quote an order number (I assume they didn't give her one), so she is relying on them finding the order from her details (which I am sure they will use as an excuse to try and make it difficult for her to cancel) - so she might be better waiting so that they have no excuses.

But if she did send a letter before it arrives giving all of her details then a copy and proof of postage should be enough to persuade her bank to do a chargeback, if they mess her around.

Sorry, I should have made it clear that the order was successfully cancelled.

But these fraudsters still called her back trying to persuade her to pay by cheque. They also asked my aunt if her relatives had persuaded her not to cancel the purchase, to which she replied 'yes'.

So, please be warned about these scammers.

I have just contacted the Financial Conduct Authority (previously known as the FSA)

They inform me that Danny Keet's former company GOT U COVERED LTD should have been registered with the FSA as it was selling Sky Insurance. GOT U COVERED LTD was never registered with the FSA.

The FCA also tell me that the database of Sky customers was stolen some years ago, and that several companies started up business - contacting Sky customers offering insurance.

GOT U COVERED is now dissolved but its customers were taken over over by another company called SHORE BROKERS LTD. Danny Keet is also a director of SHORE BROKERS LTD.

Danny Keet is also a director of SHORE BROKERS LTD.

Along with One4All Building Services Ltd and Home Computer Support Ltd.

There is also another similarly named company Shore Financial Services Ltd operating from the same address that he is not a director of, which is likely connected.

Shore Brokers Ltd is an agent for Shore Financial Services Ltd - in my complaint to the FCA I made this clear.
