They take £2.50 from your account to check the credit card is genuine. Just a quick question, as I sent the phone back within 7 days, ....am I entitled to claim the £2.50 back? Would be grateful for your thoughts! Cheers :)

I really doubt it, I'm afraid. Especially if the phone wasn;t actually faulty. You COULD try ringing them. Not sure how helpful they are - read mixed feedback, but personally have generally found them better than most.

Do a chargeback with your CC.

    FGS it's only £2.50 !!!

If they aren't charging you for return postage or any admin charges for returning (e.g. P2UD charges something like £40 or £50), then £2.50 for returning a phone because you changed your mind is money well spent.
  • I doubt you will get the money back, in fact i know they wont give it you back.

    agree with happyhunter!

Thanks for your opinions....Sorry if I was a bit unclear but they take £2.50 off everyone to see if their cc is genuine in the first instance. It's the principle of the matter. Companies shouldnt get away with this whether it's £2.50 or £250 imho

Why should you pay admin charges? I thought the 7 day cooling off period entitles you to change your mind, penalty free???
  • If you want to know why charges are necessary you should try working for an online retailer!

Working with these retailers, the amount of fraud they have going through checkouts, coupled with every increasing clawback from networks .. the charge to check the card for fraud is essential for any mobile phone retailer.

Its not a case of getting away with it, its just a charge they have to pay from banks which they are passing on (of course may not be as high as £2.50) however regardless of whether you return or dont return the phone the retailer still will get charged for this card check from the bank / merchant service provider.

Just ring them and ask them nicely, saying that the order has been cancelled. This happened to me with The Mobile Outlet and they sent the money (£1.99) back to my credit card account after I called them and explained.

If they refuse, contact your credit card company to dispute the transaction under the reason: payment for goods not received. Your credit card company is jointly and severally liable to any transactions take place in your account. If anything goes wrong with the transaction, it is your choice to claim from either the retailer or the credit card company or even both!

That may be so, but it comes with the territory of being an online retailer. If the charges are against the terms of the cooling of period, (which i would have thought they were) the consumer has every right for the money back.
