I meant switching it off at the mains plug and then back on again.
I was going to go the rigmarole of setting the router up again as described by Deneb but I can't remember my username and password. I wrote them down on the box that the router came in but, you've guessed it...... I can't find the extremely safe place where I put it.
I do know what you mean...and we don't bother ourselves do we - basically because ( in my case anyway) we expect to "get what we paid for" from workmen...so we haven't bothered.....because we wont need it ever will we?.....
There are downsides to "knowing what WE personally are on about" and therefore expecting other people to aren't there in THEIR own personal little Knowledge Areas...ahem....? ...goes off to tear out some more hair...and I wont have much left soon at this rate...
..just a case of "Thankthelawd" that there are some people on MSE who are patient enough that they can explain things in words of two syllables to those of us who don't have this particular thing as one of our own personal Knowledge Areas...0 -
Is it working yet, or not?!!

Thank you very much for your input.
The computer is still taking its time to get itself going of a morning (compared to what I am used to), but thankfully hasn't blocked me again with that darn Gateway screen.
The remedy you suggested sounds simple enough for even me to do.
I decided, in the event, to send an email to the computer guy who set my computer up in the first place and explain exactly what I had been told and that he apparently hadn't finished setting the computer up properly in the first place and this would appear to be why this is happening. I've told him your suggested remedy and requested him to come back under the guarantee I assume I have on his set-up work to complete setting up the computer.
Being rather cautious by nature, I felt it best to play it this way, but I am indebted to you for making it plain to me exactly what the problem is and what needs doing to sort it out.:T0
