Sorry for bumping such an old thread, but I wanted an excuse for a status update from Penelope. ;):D

I'm looking into getting some chickens for my backyard, only a couple for say 1-2 eggs/day. Any pointers or advice?

You may be better looking here - Hey! Let's keep chickens. Buy a smallholder type magazine, or Practical Poultry, and they'll have lots of ads at the back for poultry suppliers in your area

Is it really 3 years since we last had chicks?

We now have some more :j Last year we bought 3 pure-bred Welsummer hens, and what looked like one Light Sussex, and one Light Sussex/Welsummer cross hens. Last summer, the cross-breed went broody, so we set about sourcing a cockerel.

Earlier in the spring we bought a cockerel. He's a handsome chappie :T

The cross-bred hen became broody again last month, so 3 weeks ago, we set 7 eggs and moved her into the new broody house that DS built for us

Today they've started hatching :j:j:j:j:j:j
