  • So sorry to hear of your sad loss, it brought tears to my eyes.

when my Nan died 35 years ago, I had a pretty stone that a policeman has given her as a child. It was all I wanted. My cousin had an old belt that she used to tie around her apron!

What about thinking of a special place she would take them to, perhaps a park, or the woods, or the seaside, and maybe take a photo of that place and frame it. Or perhaps if possible donate a bench in her name. If she sang them songs or lullabies, how about framing the words as these are the kinds of things the children remember.

I think it's memories, not particularly buying something, so anything to bring about a happy memory will be happily received in future.

Its a difficult time for all concerned, hope you find some peace xx

Hi there, my children were similar ages when they lost my Mum and then my Grandad to cancer too.

Their most treasured possessions to come out of it are for my daughter a framed photo of my Mum when she was in her late teens and my son treasures my grandads old tobacco tins.

The first Christmas I brought them both a present, just a couple of little trinkets really, and just explained that I had bought this for them with their grandmother in mind. I dont remember what I bought though now! It was the things they helped themselves to that they have continued to treasure, not the things I 'thought' would be memories.

My husband has a drawer full of his grandads olds tins, a spanner, weird looking jars and nails. He says it reminds him of his grampy's shed and calms him down in times of stress, as that's where my husband used to go and talk through problems. He's 45 now and says he can still smell the shed when he opens his drawer. What a brilliant keepsake x
