Hi there we got our American bulldog from our local paper and we had no problems. We did go and see the parents of our boy and did visit him on different occassions to make sure everything ok.
I dont know where you are but in the same paper there is somone advertisin shitz zu's but its some where in devon or cornwall.
If you'd like the number let me know and i'll find it.
Like some of you have said though is there are some nasty peolpe out there that dont care about the welfare of the animals.

    cheers
  • If you are looking for a pedigree I'd find a reputable breeder who comes with references from their breed club not just someone off the KC list as anyone with a KC reg dog can go on their list if they pay.

Be aware that you might face interrogation off a breeder. I am a breeder and not ashamed(!) I only breed once a year at most as I breed when wishing to keep a potential show dog) and all my pups are sold under contract and potential buyers are evaluated. Some people wait a year or more for one of my pups.

I think its a pure myth that genuine breeders are making lots of money from selling their pups, at least if that is so I must be doing something wrong!

The cost of shows is through the roof, £25 just for one entry fee, then there is petrol money and all to prove that your dog conforms to a breed standard and is a good example of the breed. Believe me the costs mount up over the year.
Don't get me wrong its my hobby and I love it (I am a fully qualified KC judge)
Then there are Vet costs involved in breeding the parents- health checks, scanning, c-sections, etc etc.
If you are lucky enough to produce a litter you actually have to rear the litter which in my breed involves 24/7 care for the first few weeks of life and of course any Vet fees not to mention the cost of rearing. So time off work is needed and money lost.

If anything goes wrong later on in life a good breeder will take back the dog and NOT let you put it into rescue!!
None of my dogs are allowed to go into rescue they all come with a contract which youd have to sign saying this. In fact in our breed we have a welfare centre and any breeder who doesn't pull their weight in rehoming and aftercare soon finds a lack of friends.

I have nothing against rescue dogs (I was brought up with them as my mum was always saving them) but you do have to remember that they can have similar health problems as pedigrees and you don't know their background.
Of course if you do go for a rescue you are saving a dogs life and you can find some real characters when they are older.

It all depends on what you are looking for....

Thanks for the different perspective danceinthedark. Glad to see you at least take the dogs back, unfortunately a lot of dealers/breeders don't work this way.

    Good breeders should.
Unfortunately it is the bad breeders who think that their responsibility ends with the sale of a dog who gives others a bad name.
Not every one is like this and those who do should be named and shamed in my book. I feel very strongly about this as I have helped our welfare and rehoming dogs in the past (and hopefully will continue this work).

I've spent eleven years working on getting a good reputation as a breeder, judge and owner so believe me I really despise those people who think dogs are nothing but money makers for them. Luckily the breed I am involved with are difficult to rear as pups so most of the puppy farmers steer clear.
    Thank God.
