Hello etch
As we have a 'Pets & Pet Care' board, I'll move your thread across.
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email !!!!!!.

Not sure where you are ? but howabout the 'LOOT' its online and carries loads and loads of ads.0

I would avoid newspaper adverts and online 'puppy websites' as they are likely to be back yard breeders or puppy farmers. If you are set on a pedigree puppy then contact the breed clubs and ask for a list of reputable breeders in your area. Alternatively, visit your local rescue centre where I'm sure you'll find lots of dogs needing new homes. Visit dogpages.org.uk for full listings of rescue centres and breed specific rescue organisations. It is much better to put your name down on a reputable breeder's waiting list, than to get any puppy you find on the internet or in a paper just because it happens to be available. You may find you're storing up problems for the future because there could be health/behavioural problems caused by the puppy's breeding and early experiences.
good luck finding a happy healthy puppy. Even if it takes a bit longer than you'd first thought it'll be well worth it in the end

I absolutely agree, do any of you go on Gumtree? I've never seen so many silly people who advertise their dog for rehoming for free  They don't know who it is who collects them dogs, but i guess they don't care as long as they get rid :mad:0 -
Just so you know, a companion is very unlikely to prevent the boxer from suffering phantom pregnancies ... have you considered talking to your vet about dealing with the phantoms? For some dogs they're really distressing and it is a preventable problem.
I echo what others have said about looking via breed clubs.0 -
I agree - avoid free ads etc. Apart from the fact that these people are unscrupulous back yard breeders, who often compromise animal welfare (reputable breeders would have a full list of homechecked potential owners, who they could home health checked, well bred pups to), what at first may seem to be a cheap dog may turn out to be a very expensive purchase if it turns out to have either short and/or long term health problems.
Do check out your local rescue - they often have puppies that will have been vet checked, vaccinated and neutered if old enough. You might be lucky enough to get a young dog (rather than a puppy) that has been bought up with children.
Good luck with your search.

I'm a dog foster carer and we get loads of ex puppy farm dogs who are suffering side effects and as long as people dump or sell on the cheap or buy pups on the doorstep then these farms will continue to run.

I am sorry but i DISAGREE that all people who put private ads are puppy farms / backyards breeders . I have got my 2 dogs from private adds and the people that bred them , where neither of those things . If you cannot see what type of person is breeding them , how the animals are kept etc and make your mind up from that if they are genuine or not , then dont get a puppy. Also i had to undergo intensive questioning on looking after my dogs, home approval, and got a nice pack to take home with the pups .SO please dont tar everyone with the same brush , just because they use a free-ad!0

I didn't say all, i'm saying it's risky, your better off getting a dog/pup from a rescue home who will vet all homes and ensure all dogs are neutured first.
With ads you could end up getting a dog with an aggressive nature, the sellers are not going to tell you if it has
You won't know it's background or if the dog is ok with kids. Getting one from a rescue centre they will assess the dog with cats, dogs and kids before they let you adopt. 0 -
Some ads are from people who are looking for a good home for their dog after a change of lifestyle-eg divorce. But I think they will be for more mature dogs-not pups.
Have you contacted the rescue places for the breeds you are interested in? For example,I have a 6 month old much loved Vizsla and sister is up for re-homing already at that young age (what WERE they thinking??? It's such a shame-poor pup!) I would rehome her but already have a Weimeraner too-no room at this inn.
So you may find an older pup who's owner's can't cope? Be positive-probably will be housetrained and gone through puppy teeth? and you will be giving an older pup a good home after a rotten start?
Good luck and let us know how you get along
