Nexus 5

Apologies if there is already a thread on this new phone but I couldn't see one posted in the last 24hrs.

For those out of the loop, Google launched their latest "Nexus" phone last night at 6pm UK time and the phone has gone on sale on their website.

I think it's worth highlighting here as if anyone is looking for a "best bang for buck" premium mobile phone then the Nexus 5 has to be it (hey I don't work for Google, honest!!).

Unfortunately this is a little more expensive than the previous model, but the specs are fantastic. There is no other option when it comes to buying a premium SIM Free phone right now (if there is, please do let me know!)

It is also available at Carphone Warehouse for £295, £5 less than Google's shop and with free delivery. (I don't work for them either!!)

Equivalent premium phones will set you back £400-500 so this really is in a league of its own. And once you have it you get to chose a SIM card (see threads in this forum for recommendations I won't go into it here).

PS. if anyone is looking for a friendly UK based community Nexus 5 forum then I recommend this forum (sorry for the promotion, mods please remove if inappropriate?).

If Google had put an SD card slot I might have looked it, but with out I'm not interested. (but, yes. The rest of the spec is very nice).

It probably will be best bang for buck premium phone but as no one has got one or reviewed one yet I think you're being a bit previous in your assumption.

It's just possible it may have some serious flaws
  • I agree, Nexus 5 is shaping up to be an amazing phone for the price. Top of the line specs that are a third to half price cheaper than anything else with equivalent on the market.

Just to add to what the OP said..

Carphone Warehouse are £5 cheaper than if you buy it from Google Play but they only sell the 16GB version. O2 currently have an exclusive on the 32Gb version but I seriously wouldn't even consider getting it from O2 looking at their prices:

    £529 for PAYG on O2.
£350 (inc P&P) Google Play - for the same phone!! Their monthly contract deals look equally terrible value for money.

Currently CPW & O2 are the only places in which you can buy a Nexus 5 outside the Google Play store. Once the exclusivity deal ends I know three Mobile will be selling it, possibly others too.

    I've got one.

I walked into my local Carphone Warehouse first thing this morning and bought one SIM-free.

Not had any problems with it so far. Screen is gorgeous and brighter than the N4. Boot animation is no longer a multi-coloured "X" but is four different coloured circles that merge together and separate.

Camera is nice and no longer requires you to wait until it focuses before taking a photo. The back is the same soft rubberised plastic as found on older Thinkpads.

Proper, full-colour emoji built into the standard keyboard (you hold down the return key to switch), but Chrome still doesn't render emoji from the web. :(

Completely different wallpapers, notifications and ringtones than 4.3.

Very speedy (but so was the N4 in my opinion). No crashes, lockups or any other snags so far.

I popped a 3 PAYG SIM into my N4 and experienced my first HD Voice call; wow.

We reserved on on-line for CPW. Got a confirmation email and a text stating it was ready to pick up. Went to the Trafford Centre to pick it up and the staff refused to sell it to us. Asked to speak to manager and was sent to the other store upstairs where we spoke with the manager and he also refused to sell it to us stating that they were only letting them go for people on contract. Tried to argue that we had a confirmation but they would not budge. Wasted journey. Just be aware if getting from CPW.

I may be forced to 'accidentally' drop my Galaxy Nexus into the loo so I've got an excuse to buy one of these :)
  • Nexus 5 is appealing

Thinking if buying the phone and then sticking a sim only in it.

It's not available on Vodafone but can you put a Vodafone sim only card in it? Will it work?

Vodafone have a good sim only deal which is unlimited calls and texts, and 6gb of data, with spotify premium included (which costs me £10 a month) all for £17.66 for 12 months (it says £26pm but you are given £100 cash back, which takes it down to £17.66pm)

If you buy direct from Google, the phone is unlocked. You can use any Micro-SIM.
  • Was in CPW in the Metro Centre this morning, they aren't getting their first delivery in until early this week, and they confirmed they would only be doing the 16Gb version.

Yes of course, as long as you buy a sim free Nexus 5.
